The Big Block Duvet is a pieced-cotton duvet cover pattern, not a conventional quilt with batting. It comes in twin, full/queen, and king sizes; the squares are joined into a simple grid, then the pieced top is attached to a backing and closed on one side with hook-and-loop tape. The American Patchwork & Quilting Editors published the pattern on June 14, 2013, so treat its instructions as a dated pattern page, not a recently tested revision.
What the Big Block Duvet pattern makes
The pattern turns a pieced quilt top into a duvet cover that can go over a comforter. The publisher describes the result as “summer weight” because the cover is finished without batting. That construction is the key difference from a standard layered quilt: the pieced top and backing form a cover, rather than a quilt sandwich with batting in the middle.

The publisher says the cover can custom-cover a comforter and refresh a bedroom’s look. The pattern page does not specify a particular comforter brand or give separate fitting instructions for different comforter lofts.
Choose a size and check the fabric quantities
The pattern lists three options. Full and queen are combined as one size; there are no separate full and queen versions. Yardages below are for 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric, and the pattern says measurements include a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

These are the pattern’s stated quantities, not a guarantee that every fabric choice or layout will work with less. Check the original size-specific materials list before buying, especially for king: the king list differs substantially in backing yardage and does not list hook-and-loop tape, although the instructions direct larger sizes to repeat the twin closure steps.
How the blocks are arranged
The center is a grid of 10 1/2-inch squares. Select the size first, since that determines both the number of squares and the row arrangement.

The instructions have you sew the squares into rows and join the rows to form the center. Border strips are added around that pieced center before the top is joined to the backing.

- Cut the number of 10 1/2-inch squares required for your chosen size, using the pattern’s specified assorted prints.
- Sew the squares into the stated number of rows, then join the rows to make the center panel.
- Add the border strips as directed in the pattern.
- Join the duvet top to the backing on three sides.
- Finish the open fourth side with hook-and-loop tape, following the pattern’s closure directions. For full/queen and king, the instructions refer to repeating the twin-size border and closure steps.
