What “Flowerpot Quilt Block” refers to
Flower-pot imagery has a longer history in American quilts, but that does not establish a direct lineage for this contemporary pattern. A Traditional Fine Arts Organization exhibition catalogs a Pennsylvania “Red and Green Pots of Flowers Four-Block Quilt Top,” circa 1850, and a New York State “Orange Pots of Flowers Quilt,” circa 1860–1870; both are described as hand appliquéd cotton quilts or quilt tops. The exhibition notes that the scroll-handled pot appears in American quilts from the eighteenth century and was especially favored in the Philadelphia area on whole-cloth quilts and quilted petticoats. See the exhibition description for those objects and its historical context.
A digitized February 16, 1977 issue of Georgia’s Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin also lists a “flowerpot” quilt pattern among patterns offered by Mrs. Arthur Gentles in Toccoa. The classified advertisement does not describe that design, so it cannot be assumed to match the 2017 AllPeopleQuilt block. The record is available through the Digital Library of Georgia.
