The Big Block Table Runner finishes at 20 × 52 inches and features three large, unpieced print squares among Four-Patch blocks and pieced rectangles. The pattern calls for 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabrics and includes ¼-inch seam allowances in its measurements. Here are the materials, cut sizes, and construction sequence from the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ pattern, published June 14, 2013.

Fabric requirements
Quantities below are for the pattern as published, using 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric. The backing is specified by cut size rather than yardage.

The three large squares are the main showcase for a bold motif: each is cut 12½ inches square. Choose a print whose desired design will read clearly inside that area. The pattern page gives Timeless Treasures’ Fruit Punch collection as an example, not as a required or necessarily available fabric. Coordinate the small print and tone-on-tones so the colored blocks sit comfortably alongside the large-scale design.

Cutting list
- Cut 16 multicolor polka-dot squares, each 2½ inches.
- Cut six green and six orange tone-on-tone squares, each 2½ inches.
- Cut four turquoise tone-on-tone squares, each 2½ inches.
- Cut 80 squares, each 2½ inches, from the small novelty print and scraps of the fabrics already cut.
- Cut 40 light-brown tone-on-tone rectangles, each 2½ × 6½ inches.
- Cut three large novelty-print squares, each 12½ inches.
Keep the pattern’s fabric-width and fiber assumptions in mind when substituting materials. Its listed yardage is not verified for other fabric widths, fibers, or alternate finished sizes.

How to sew the runner
1. Make the Four-Patch units
Combine the 2½-inch squares into Four-Patch units using the pattern’s color arrangement. The instructions yield three green, three orange, and two turquoise Four-Patch units. Press the seams as you work so the blocks lie flat.

2. Make the pieced rectangle units
- Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2½-inch small square.
- Place a marked square at each end of a 2½ × 6½-inch light-brown rectangle, right sides together, with the marked lines positioned as shown in the pattern.
- Sew along the marked lines. Trim away the excess fabric, retaining ¼-inch seam allowances, then press the attached triangles open.
- Repeat to make 40 rectangle units, then join them in pairs to make 20 pairs.
Follow the publisher’s assembly illustration for the diagonal orientation and the exact placement of each unit; reversing a triangle’s direction changes the finished layout.
3. Arrange and sew the rows
Arrange the Four-Patch units, rectangle pairs, and three large print squares in the pattern’s three horizontal rows, following the assembly diagram. Check the placement and orientation before sewing the pieces into rows, then join the rows to complete the top.

4. Finish the runner
- Place the top and 20½ × 52½-inch backing rectangle right sides together and sew around the perimeter, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning.
- Turn the runner right side out, press, and slip-stitch the opening closed.
- If you want the layers secured for laundering, the pattern suggests optional stitch-in-the-ditch quilting.
