For a 1-inch finished single-fold binding, extend the batting and backing 3/4 inch beyond the quilt top, then wrap the binding over those layers and hand-stitch it to the backing. The steps below follow the AllPeopleQuilt tutorial; this is one specific construction, not a universal binding standard.

How this wide, single-fold binding is constructed

Unlike ordinary folded binding, this method uses the quilt’s extended batting and backing as the layers wrapped by the binding. The binding attaches to the quilt top with a scant 1/4-inch seam, turns over the extended layers, and is finished by hand on the backing. It produces a finished binding 1 inch wide.

Prepare the quilt and binding

1. Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing; baste and quilt as desired.
2. Trim the batting and backing so each extends 3/4 inch beyond the quilt top on every edge.
3. Cut 2-1/2 × 42-inch strips of binding fabric and piece them into one continuous strip.
4. Measure the quilt perimeter and make the continuous strip long enough to go around it, with extra length for joins and handling. The tutorial does not specify a total-length formula or a particular extra allowance.
5. Turn one raw edge of the continuous strip under 1/4 inch and press it.

Attach the binding and turn the corners

1. Align the binding’s raw edge with the raw edge of the quilt top. Sew it in place using a scant 1/4-inch seam allowance.
2. At each quilt-top corner, stop stitching 1/2 inch before the corner.
3. Fold the binding upward toward the edge of the batting and backing to make a diagonal fold. After folding, the binding’s folded edge should align with the quilt top’s raw edge.
4. Continue sewing around the quilt, repeating the same stop-and-fold procedure at each corner.

Wrap and finish the binding

Turn the pressed, folded edge over the extended batting and backing. Hand-stitch the binding to the backing to finish.

How this differs from another single-layer method

Singer’s single-layer binding tutorial shows a different adjustable-width construction with mitered corners; its example finishes at 5/8 inch. The AllPeopleQuilt method described above finishes at 1 inch and wraps over batting and backing that extend beyond the quilt top. These are different constructions, and the available tutorials do not establish that one is more durable or better for a particular quilt.
