The Big Blooms Wall Hanging is a machine-appliqué quilt pattern that finishes at 48-1/2 inches square, with four 16-inch finished blocks. It combines fussy-cut floral centers and colorful flower appliqués with black blanket stitching, pieced red-and-coral sashing, and black borders. The project was published by AllPeopleQuilt on June 14, 2013, and is inspired by Pat Sloan’s Passion Flowers.
What you need to know before starting
This is a quilting project, not a painted wall-art pattern. The instructions use lightweight fusible web to position fabric shapes on white cotton foundations, then secure the appliqué with a narrow machine blanket stitch in black thread. The listed fabric collection references are from the pattern’s 2013 publication; treat the amounts below as the pattern requirements, not as confirmation that those specific fabrics are still available.

Fabric and supply requirements
Gather the fabrics and finishing supplies below. The large flower print is used for fussy-cut centers, so choose a print with motifs large enough to cut out as individual centers.

How to make the Big Blooms Wall Hanging
1. Prepare and arrange the appliqué blocks
- Cut four 18-inch squares from the white print for the block foundations.
- Crease each foundation in half horizontally and vertically, then diagonally in both directions. These creases serve as placement guides.
- Trace the pattern shapes onto lightweight fusible web, fuse the web to the wrong side of the appropriate fabrics, cut out the shapes, and remove the paper backings.
- Arrange the leaves, turquoise buds, black flower, colored circles, and fussy-cut flower center on each foundation, using the creases to guide placement. The blocks vary in accent color: one uses turquoise, while the others use coral, dark red, or light green.
- Fuse the appliqués in place according to the fusible web’s directions.
2. Stitch and trim the blocks
Use black thread and a narrow machine blanket stitch to sew around each appliqué shape. Press gently from the back, taking care not to disturb the fused pieces. Trim each block to 16-1/2 inches square, including seam allowances; this produces a 16-inch finished block after assembly.
3. Piece the sashing and quilt center
- For each sashing strip, alternate four 2-1/2-inch coral squares with four 2-1/2-inch red-print squares. Make 12 strips.
- Arrange the four appliqué blocks, the sashing strips, and nine light-green squares in the pattern’s five-row layout.
- Sew the pieces into rows, then join the rows to make a quilt center measuring 38-1/2 inches square.
4. Add borders and finish the quilt
Cut two black-print border strips 5-1/2 by 48-1/2 inches and two strips 5-1/2 by 38-1/2 inches. Sew the shorter strips to opposite edges of the quilt center first, then add the longer strips to the remaining edges. Layer the quilt top with batting and backing, baste, quilt as desired, and bind with five black tone-on-tone strips cut 2-1/2 by 42 inches.

Choosing fabrics and placement
The pattern’s visual contrast comes from the large floral centers, the colored appliqué accents, and black stitching against white foundations. When substituting fabrics, prioritize a flower print with motifs that can be fussy-cut at the pattern’s center size, plus colors that remain distinct from the black stitching. You can keep the listed accent colors or choose a coordinated palette; those are design choices, not tested performance alternatives.
The project page identifies its original fabrics as Blank Quilting’s Jane Collection and Splash basics and credits Laura Boehnke as quilt tester. The pattern is authored by American Patchwork & Quilting Editors; Pat Sloan is credited as the inspiration for Passion Flowers, not as the pattern author.
