“On the fly” usually means doing something quickly or improvising without much advance preparation, often while another activity is already underway. The phrase can also mean literally while airborne, or— in computing—while software keeps running.

What does “on the fly” mean?

In everyday English, to do something on the fly is to handle it spontaneously, with little planning or preparation. It often happens in the middle of another task. For example: “We worked out the schedule on the fly” means the group made the schedule as events unfolded rather than planning it in advance.

Cambridge defines the phrase as doing something quickly, often while doing something else, without preparing or thinking too much about how it should be done (Cambridge English Dictionary; see also Collins).

What does “on the fly” mean in computing?

In computing, on the fly can describe an operation carried out while a program or application continues running, without a full restart. For instance, “The software translates text on the fly” means it translates as the user works, rather than requiring a separate stop-and-restart step. In this technical use, the phrase is about uninterrupted operation; it does not necessarily mean the work was improvised or done without planning. Cambridge and Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries record this computing sense.

What does the phrase mean literally?

Literally, on the fly can mean while something is airborne or in flight. In baseball and other sports, catching a ball on the fly means catching it before it touches the ground. “The outfielder caught it on the fly” uses the airborne sense, not the everyday idea of improvising. Dictionary.com and Collins include these uses.

Regional meanings

Some uses are regionally marked rather than universal. Collins lists British informal on the fly meaning “without coming to a stop,” and a mainly Scottish sense meaning “in secret; sneakily.” These are distinct from the common informal meaning of acting spontaneously.

Where does “on the fly” come from?

The phrase’s history is not settled to one definitive origin. Dictionary.com dates the figurative shift from the literal sense of being in midair or in flight to the mid-1800s; this is a broad dating, not an exact first-use year. A secondary history page, Idiom Origins, reports an 1851 baseball example, but that citation does not prove baseball created the broader idiom.

How to tell which meaning is intended

  • Improvisation: In “We changed the plan on the fly,” the action is spontaneous or made with little preparation.
  • Computing: In “The application updates the preview on the fly,” the operation happens while the software continues running.
  • Literal flight or sport: In “The bird caught an insect on the fly” or “The outfielder caught the ball on the fly,” something is airborne.
  • Regional usage: If the context suggests moving without stopping or doing something secretly, the British or mainly Scottish senses may apply.
