The stool is Billex, a product by French furniture maker Maximum. Its main material is shredded banknotes supplied through the Banque de France partnership described by the company. Maximum says it heats and strongly compresses the fragments into a rigid material, then makes the stool from it.
What is the Billex stool made from?
Banknote shreddings form the stool’s principal material, but Billex is not made only of banknotes: Maximum lists four steel brackets and eight screws as well. The company says the banknotes use a cotton substrate with two protective layers, including a film it describes as essential to producing the Billex range.
According to Maximum, imperfect banknotes are shredded during production controls, weighed and sent to its workshop in Ivry-sur-Seine. The company says it accumulates the fragments, heats them and applies strong compression to create the rigid material used for the stool. This is the maker’s account of its supply and manufacturing process.
