The headline about Bing Image Creator being “powered by the latest DALL·E 3” refers to Microsoft’s December 18, 2024 rollout of DALL·E 3 PR16. Microsoft said the update generated images twice as fast as the previous Bing experience and improved image quality. That was a product claim, not an independently measured benchmark—and it is no longer the complete story.
Today, Bing Image Creator is a free, multi-model service. Depending on your account, location, interface, and rollout status, you may be able to choose between DALL·E 3, GPT-4o, and Microsoft’s MAI-Image models. DALL·E 3 remains useful for generating several visual options from one prompt, but it is no longer accurate to describe Bing as a single-model DALL·E 3 product.
What Microsoft changed with DALL·E 3 PR16
On December 18, 2024, Microsoft announced that Bing Image Creator was rolling out DALL·E 3 PR16. Microsoft described two main improvements:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Images would be generated twice as fast as before.
- Image quality would be improved.
Microsoft did not publish a neutral benchmark or a fixed number of seconds per image. Actual waiting times can vary with demand, your account, region, browser, selected model, and whether you still have fast creations available. The “twice as fast” wording should therefore be understood as Microsoft’s comparison with its previous Bing Image Creator experience.
#1 Best Overall
The same announcement highlighted easier entry points, including image creation from the Bing search bar and Microsoft Edge’s address bar. Microsoft also said that users had created billions of images since the service launched.

DALL·E 3 was already available in Bing
PR16 was not Bing’s first DALL·E 3 integration. Bing Image Creator launched on March 21, 2023, using an advanced DALL·E model. Microsoft announced that DALL·E 3 became generally available in Bing Chat and Bing.com/create on October 3, 2023.
Microsoft said that the original DALL·E 3 integration improved:
- Overall image quality and detail.
- Understanding of natural-language prompts.
- Hands and faces.
- Text rendered inside images.
- Accuracy when translating a written description into a composition.
The December 2024 PR16 update was therefore a later revision or deployment improvement—not the first time Bing received DALL·E 3.

What Bing Image Creator offers now
Microsoft’s current Bing Image Creator documentation presents the service as a model-selection tool. The listed options include:
- DALL·E 3: a familiar option that Microsoft says generates multiple images from one creation.
- GPT-4o: positioned by Microsoft as a strong option for photorealistic imagery, detailed prompts, text, and fine visual details.
- MAI-Image models: newer Microsoft models whose exact names and availability can vary as Microsoft updates the service.
Model labels and access can differ by account, country, product surface, and rollout stage. The model selector may appear on Bing Image Creator but not in every Copilot or Bing interface.
Microsoft’s current model information is available on the Bing Image Creator page. Microsoft announced GPT-4o as an additional selectable model on August 6, 2025.
How to use DALL·E 3 in Bing Image Creator
- Open Bing Image Creator.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account if prompted.
- Enter a descriptive prompt.
- Open the model selector and choose DALL·E 3.
- Select Create.
- Review the generated images, then download, save, share, or remix an image where those controls are available.
Microsoft’s documentation says DALL·E 3 produces multiple images from a prompt and counts the set as one creation. GPT-4o and listed MAI options may produce a single image per request.
You may also encounter Image Creator through the Bing app, Copilot Search, Bing search, or the Edge address bar. The exact controls are not guaranteed to be identical across those surfaces.

- Confirm that you are signed in.
- Use the official Bing Image Creator page rather than a different Copilot surface.
- Check whether the feature is still rolling out to your account or region.
- Make sure you are creating from text rather than editing an uploaded image.
Microsoft says uploaded-image editing is handled by GPT-4o. That workflow does not offer DALL·E 3 selection and may also restrict access to certain MAI models.

Is Bing Image Creator free?
Yes, Microsoft describes Bing Image Creator as free, but “free” does not mean unlimited fast generation.
Microsoft’s current documentation states that users receive:
- 15 fast creations per day. These replenish the following day.
- Standard-speed creations after fast creations are used, although they may take longer.
- The option to use Microsoft Rewards points for additional fast generation.
- A maximum of 200 prompts in a 24-hour period, after which the allowance replenishes over that period.
In practical terms, Bing offers free access, a limited fast-generation allowance, slower standard generation, and a separate prompt cap. It should not be described simply as unlimited or always fast. Check Microsoft’s current help page for account-specific notices.

| Need | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several visual options from one prompt | DALL·E 3 | Microsoft says DALL·E 3 generates multiple images per creation. |
| Photorealistic scenes or detailed visual instructions | GPT-4o or an available MAI model | Microsoft positions newer options as stronger for realism, detail, and visual interpretation. |
| Editing an uploaded image | GPT-4o | Microsoft says uploaded-image editing uses GPT-4o. |
| A familiar DALL·E-style Bing result | DALL·E 3 | It remains a selectable option in Microsoft’s current documentation. |
There is no evidence here for a universal “best” model. Newer MAI models may offer sharper detail, richer color, or improved text rendering according to Microsoft’s descriptions, but results depend heavily on the prompt and task.
Prompt examples for better results
A useful structure is:
Subject + action + setting + composition + lighting + style + perspective + color palette + aspect ratio + text requirements
For example:
A clean editorial illustration of a red fox reading a book beside a rainy café window, three-quarter view, warm amber lighting, muted teal and rust palette, detailed watercolor-and-ink style, square composition, no extra objects.
For text-heavy images, put the exact wording in quotation marks, request “legible printed text,” and use a simple poster or sign layout. Keep the wording short and proofread every result. DALL·E 3 improved text handling relative to earlier image systems, but it can still misspell words, change letters, or invent extra text.

For more consistent results, describe distinctive subject features, keep the setting and style stable, change one variable at a time, and save prompts that work. Character identity, object counts, logos, and small details can still vary between generations.

Results are slow
Check whether your fast creations have been exhausted. Standard-speed generation is intentionally slower, and demand, region, model, and account conditions can also affect waiting times. Microsoft’s PR16 claim does not guarantee a fixed response time today.
The image contains incorrect text
Shorten the wording, put the exact copy in quotation marks, request a simple layout, and regenerate. For important posters, advertisements, labels, or social graphics, replace or correct the text in conventional design software.
Editing an uploaded image removes DALL·E 3
That is expected under Microsoft’s documented workflow. Uploaded-image editing is routed through GPT-4o, so use a text prompt with DALL·E 3 when you need that model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe prompt is refused or blocked
Rewrite the request without sensitive personal information, sexual content, graphic violence, or instructions that could enable harm. Do not try to evade safety controls. A refusal can also reflect requests involving real people, privacy, impersonation, or copyrighted material.
Is Bing Image Creator suitable for professional work?
Bing Image Creator is a strong free starting point for concept art, mood boards, social-media ideas, classroom projects, and early marketing concepts. DALL·E 3’s multiple-image output is especially useful when you want several directions from one description.
It is less suitable when you need guaranteed typography, exact brand marks, repeatable characters, controlled retouching, confidential assets, or a predictable production workflow. Generated logos, likenesses, and branded or copyrighted material require particular care. Do not assume that free access automatically means every output is commercially safe.
Before commercial use, review Microsoft’s current terms and responsible-AI guidance. Do not upload confidential documents, private photographs, customer information, or unreleased designs. Get permission before editing or sharing another person’s image.
Microsoft’s current access information has described Bing Image Creator as available worldwide except Russia and China, but availability can still differ by account, product surface, and rollout. Check the live service rather than treating availability as permanent.
Alternatives to consider
Adobe Firefly is worth considering if you already use Creative Cloud or need a more production-oriented editing and design workflow. Its plans, credits, model access, and promotional terms change, so consult Adobe’s current plans page.
Midjourney is a subscription-based alternative for users who prioritize a dedicated image-generation community and a strongly stylized visual workflow. See Midjourney’s official site for current access and pricing.
ChatGPT and other OpenAI image tools may suit people who prefer conversational prompting, subject to the current model and plan. Paying for an alternative does not automatically guarantee better results than Bing DALL·E 3; workflow, privacy, editing, consistency, and usage limits matter more than the label alone.

Bottom line
The “twice as fast and better” Bing Image Creator story belongs to Microsoft’s December 2024 DALL·E 3 PR16 rollout. DALL·E 3 had already arrived in Bing in October 2023, and the current service has expanded into a multi-model tool with GPT-4o and MAI options alongside DALL·E 3.
Choose DALL·E 3 when you want its familiar behavior and multiple image options. Try GPT-4o or an available MAI model for photorealism, detailed interpretation, or uploaded-image editing. Bing remains a useful free option, but fast generation is quota-limited, standard generation can be slower, and every output should be checked for text, accuracy, privacy, and rights issues.
