The clearest black-and-white cartoon puppy characters are the Dalmatian puppies in Disney’s One Hundred and One Dalmatians: the film’s rescue story centers on the 15 puppies of Pongo and Perdita. Snoopy is another famous black-and-white cartoon dog, but the official Peanuts profile identifies him as a beagle, not specifically as a puppy.
Which cartoon puppies are black and white?
Disney’s Dalmatian puppies are the strongest direct match. The official Walt Disney Animation Studios film description presents the puppies as central to the rescue adventure and names Pongo and Perdita as their parents. Disney dates the animated film’s release to January 25, 1961.
The film adapts Dodie Smith’s children’s novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, according to the Walt Disney Archives. The Archives article, published January 28, 2022, reports that the dogs and puppies had 6,469,952 spots across 113,760 frames—a production figure attributed to the Archives, rather than an independently verified count.
How Snoopy fits—and how he differs
Snoopy is a related example if you are looking for black-and-white cartoon dogs more broadly. The official Peanuts profile identifies him as a beagle and describes his imaginative alter egos, including the Flying Ace and Joe Cool. It does not establish that he is a puppy, so he is not as direct a fit for a list specifically about puppy characters.
#1 Best Overall
- Snoopy is made of a creamy white high pile slightly shaggy faux fur
- He has two long floppy black ears and a black spot on his back
- Snoopy is 15 inches long and loves to lie on his tummy
- He is made of polyester and is soft and cuddly
- He makes the best baby shower gift or welcome home baby gift and is a top baby registry pick
The same profile attributes this reflection to Charles M. Schulz: “Snoopy’s whole personality is a little bittersweet. But he’s a very strong character. He can win or lose, be a disaster, a hero, or anything, and yet it all works out. I like the fact that when he’s in real trouble, he can retreat into a fantasy.”
