The Blazing Stars Wall Quilt is a four-block wall hanging finished at 39-1/2 inches square. Its star points use contrasting prints, while metallic-print sashing gives the design a radiating effect. The original pattern was published by AllPeopleQuilt on June 14, 2013; its dimensions, material list, and assembly directions are available in the original pattern.

What the finished quilt looks like

The design joins four Blazing Star blocks in a two-by-two layout. Each finished block is 12-1/4 inches square. Metallic stripes in the sashing help draw the eye outward from the stars; the original project used fabrics from Maestro by Kathy Hall and Big Beautiful Bugs by Lonni Rossi, both from Andover Fabrics. Those are the fabrics used for the published quilt, not a guarantee that the collections are currently available.

The project was inspired by Floating Stars, a quilt by collector Julie Hendricksen of JJ Stitches. Laura Boehnke is credited as the quilt tester.

Fabric and supplies

The pattern bases its quantities on 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric. Its measurements include 1/4-inch seam allowances. Gather:

  • Assorted dark prints in black, blue, and brown
  • Assorted light prints in gold and green
  • Assorted medium prints in green, blue, and red
  • Tone-on-tone fabrics in light green, brown, black, and olive
  • Metallic prints in olive, gold, aqua, and red for the sashing
  • 1/2 yard of mottled dark-blue fabric for binding
  • 2-2/3 yards of backing fabric
  • One 48-inch-square piece of batting

The original cutting list contains two multi-fabric quantities rendered in the source excerpt as “4-3/8-yard pieces,” an ambiguous notation that should not be interpreted as a reliable yardage instruction. Check the cutting chart on the original pattern page before buying or cutting those fabrics.

Cutting details that are clear

  • For each tone-on-tone fabric, cut four 6-1/2-inch squares; cut each square twice diagonally to make four triangles. Also cut four 4-1/8-inch squares from each tone-on-tone fabric.
  • From each metallic fabric, cut two 4-1/8-by-20-inch strips and two 4-1/8-by-12-3/4-inch strips.
  • For the binding, cut five 2-1/2-by-42-inch strips.

How the Blazing Star blocks are assembled

The pattern builds the star points from strip sets, then combines them with tone-on-tone pieces. A rotary cutter and ruler are called for; the directions use the ruler’s 45-degree line to trim the strip sets.

  • Makes use of the Studio 180 Designs Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star and Tucker Trimmer II tools (not included)
  • Pattern designed by Deb Tucker
  • Finished sizes: 68" x 102" (Twin) and 102" x 102" (King)
  1. Sew dark and light strips together to make one strip set, then sew light and medium strips together to make a second.
  2. Trim each strip set at a 45-degree angle. Cut eight 1-3/4-inch segments from each set, checking the angle every two or three cuts.
  3. Join paired segments to make diamond points. Repeat the process to create four matching sets of eight points.
  4. Combine the points with the matching tone-on-tone triangles and squares. Join the angled units into diamond pairs, then assemble two star halves and add tone-on-tone corner squares to complete the block.
  5. Check the block’s dimensions: the pattern specifies 12-3/4 inches square at this stage, including seam allowances. The star sits slightly within its background.
  6. Add metallic sashing to opposite sides using 12-3/4-inch strips, then add the remaining sides using 20-inch strips. The sashed block measures 20 inches square.

Join the blocks and finish the wall hanging

  1. Sew the four sashed blocks into two pairs, then join the pairs to complete the quilt top.
  2. Layer the top with the batting and backing, baste the layers, and quilt as desired.
  3. Bind the finished quilt using the five prepared binding strips.

Choosing prints for your version

The original color plan relies on contrast and a clear role for each fabric group. When choosing different prints, consider how each will read at the scale of the star points and sashing.

  • Skill Level: Intermediate
  • Print scale: Choose prints whose pattern remains legible in the narrow strip-pieced points; very large motifs may be cut into fragments.
  • Light and dark contrast: Preserve separation between dark, light, and medium fabrics so the star’s geometry remains visible.
  • Metallic accents: Reserve metallic prints for the sashing if you want to retain the original design’s radiating effect.
  • Color palette: The published scheme combines dark blues, blacks, and browns with gold and green lights, multicolor mediums, and olive, gold, aqua, and red metallic accents. Other palettes are possible, but the pattern does not rank or test alternatives.
