Blender has not launched an official iPad app. The project was announced in July 2025, demonstrated on an iPad Pro at SIGGRAPH later that summer, and subsequently reported as “on hold until further notice” while development attention shifted to Android tablets. As of August 18, 2026, no verified public release date exists.

What Blender actually announced

Blender announced development of a tablet-oriented version beginning with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. The plan was for a native tablet workflow—not an iPad app that merely displays a remote desktop or acts as a graphics tablet for Blender running elsewhere.

The proposed version would add multitouch and pen-oriented input while adapting Blender’s dense desktop experience to a smaller, single-window environment. Blender described the work as an extension of its regular application, involving changes to input methods, workspaces, and application templates rather than a separate beginner-only 3D program. Blender’s announcement framed the effort as a way to bring Blender’s power to devices that do not rely on a mouse and keyboard.

“Full touch and Pencil support” therefore described the project’s planned direction. It did not mean that an App Store product was available or that every desktop feature would work from an Apple Pencil alone.

What the first version was expected to do

The reported development order was narrower than the phrase “full Blender” might suggest:

  1. Basic object manipulation, including tablet-friendly selection and transformation.
  2. Sculpting, an especially natural fit for pressure-sensitive pen input.
  3. Grease Pencil support.
  4. Storyboarding and broader tablet functionality over time.

The long-term goal was to preserve Blender’s capabilities rather than create a simplified sculpting app. However, rendering, animation, compositing, simulations, Geometry Nodes, add-ons, asset management, and every desktop editor were not confirmed as first-release features. Desktop parity was an ambition, not a launch specification. Contemporary reporting on Blender’s plans also made clear that no release date had been announced.

Why Blender on a tablet is difficult

Copying Blender’s desktop interface onto an iPad would not solve the real problem. A practical tablet version would need to address:

  • Screen space: a single full-screen window offers less room than a multi-monitor desktop.
  • Input precision: touch is useful for navigation but less precise than a mouse for dense controls.
  • Keyboard dependence: many Blender workflows rely on shortcuts, modifier keys, and rapid tool changes.
  • Simultaneous inputs: the interface must distinguish between navigation gestures, finger touches, and Pencil actions.
  • Mobile limits: battery use, sustained thermal performance, memory, and scene complexity affect demanding work.
  • File management: iPadOS workflows differ from desktop folders, especially for linked assets, caches, external drives, and project files.
  • Add-ons and plug-ins: compatibility would need to be designed and tested rather than assumed.

The planned solution involved contextual overlays, floating controls, task-oriented workspaces, and lower information density. Even with those changes, a production workflow might still benefit from a keyboard, trackpad or mouse, external storage, and reliable file synchronization.

Timeline: announcement, demonstration, pause

Date What happened
July 24–25, 2025 Blender announced tablet development, beginning with iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.
August 10–14, 2025 A development build was demonstrated in connection with SIGGRAPH 2025 in Vancouver.
January–February 2026 Reports said iPad development was on hold until further notice and that Android tablets had received priority.
August 18, 2026 The available evidence still did not establish an official, publicly downloadable iPad release or launch date.

The SIGGRAPH demonstration confirms that Blender ran on an iPad Pro in a development context. It does not confirm a finished App Store application, final device list, final feature set, or ongoing public support. The later status should be described as paused or deprioritized, not permanently canceled, because no definitive cancellation announcement was identified in the available reporting. MacRumors reported the later pause, while 9to5Mac covered the original tablet design and demonstration plans.

Can you use Blender on an iPad today?

Native official app

There is no verified official iPad release in the evidence reviewed. Do not treat a 2025 demonstration or the original announcement as proof that an App Store download exists.

Remote desktop or cloud workstation

The most dependable way to use the complete Blender workflow from an iPad is to run Blender on a Mac, Windows PC, Linux workstation, or cloud computer and connect remotely. The iPad becomes the display and input client.

This preserves access to desktop modeling, animation, rendering, nodes, simulations, compositing, and add-ons, but it is not native iPad software. Results depend on network latency, bandwidth, the host computer’s GPU and storage, keyboard and Pencil handling, file transfer, and whether the connection remains stable. Desktop Blender is free to download.

Unofficial community builds

Community experiments and self-built iOS or iPadOS versions have been reported, including discussion of Blender 5.2 on an iPad Pro M2. These may involve compiling the application yourself or installing an unofficial IPA. They are not equivalent to official support.

Do not treat random IPA downloads as an ordinary consumer solution. Unknown binaries can create signing, update, stability, compatibility, provenance, and data-security problems. Never give an unofficial build access to sensitive project files unless you understand and accept the risks, and do not assume that add-ons or production files will work.

Nomad Sculpt

Nomad Sculpt is designed around touch and Apple Pencil interaction, with sculpting and painting tools including brushes, layers, masking, materials, voxel remeshing, and export capabilities. The U.S. App Store listing showed a $19.99 purchase price when checked, with an optional $15.99 Quad Remesher purchase; prices vary by region and can change. Its official information also indicates that purchases are sold separately by platform, so an iPad purchase does not automatically unlock desktop or Android versions. Check Nomad’s platform information before buying.

Should you buy an iPad Pro for Blender?

  • Buy now if you also want an iPad for drawing, illustration, video, note-taking, sculpting, or other high-end tablet work. Treat Blender support as uncertain, not as the reason to justify the purchase.
  • Wait if the native Blender app is the main reason you want an iPad Pro and you can tolerate an undefined timeline.
  • Use a desktop or laptop if you need reliable full Blender production work today.
  • Choose Nomad Sculpt or ZBrush if your immediate need is digital sculpting rather than Blender’s entire 3D pipeline.

Do not assume that every iPad Pro generation will be supported. Blender did not publish a final device list, and practical performance would depend on processor generation, memory, scene complexity, textures, modifiers, and whether the workflow was native or streamed. Apple Pencil Pro should not be treated as mandatory unless Blender publishes that requirement.

The practical verdict

Blender’s iPad project was real and ambitious: native multitouch, Apple Pencil input, and a redesigned tablet interface aimed at preserving Blender’s power. It was demonstrated, but it was not launched. With iPad development later reported on hold and Android receiving priority, an iPad Pro is not a dependable Blender purchase today.

For sculpting now, consider Nomad Sculpt or ZBrush for iPad. For Blender specifically, use desktop Blender locally or remotely. Revisit the native option only after Blender publishes a supported device list, release build, feature scope, and download date.
