Places people feel nostalgic about are often near water, and recalling those personally meaningful places increased several measured psychological outcomes in three studies. The finding is about memories—not proof that a visit to a coast or lake treats mental illness or benefits everyone.
What does “blue landscape” mean in this study?
It means a place near a body of water, such as a sea, ocean, river or lake—not simply a scene dominated by the color blue. The researchers asked which places people felt most nostalgic about and examined how participants responded when they recalled those places.

What did the researchers find?
Waterfront places were common in nostalgic memories
In the first study, blue landscapes were the most frequent settings participants named as places they felt nostalgic about. That result identifies a pattern in the study sample; it does not establish how common such memories are across the UK or US populations.

Nostalgic places felt close despite greater physical distance
In later studies, participants compared nostalgic places with ordinary places. Nostalgic places were physically farther from participants’ current locations but felt psychologically closer. They were also described as less grey and more green than ordinary places.
Recalling a nostalgic place affected several measured outcomes
Compared with a control condition, recalling a nostalgic place increased reported social connectedness, meaning in life, self-continuity, self-esteem and authenticity. These are distinct outcomes measured in the studies; they should not be collapsed into a guarantee that a memory—or a blue view—will make any particular person happier.

Who took part, and what can the sample tell us?
| Study | Participants | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Study 1 | 200 UK residents | Researchers’ sample count, not an estimate of national prevalence. |
| Study 2 | 398 US residents | Researchers’ sample count, not an estimate of national prevalence. |
| Study 3 | 400 US residents | Researchers’ sample count, not an estimate of national prevalence. |
The Cambridge release describes roughly 800 US and 200 UK participants. It also says the location maps are illustrative, not representative maps of either country’s population. The paper calls for research in more countries and cultures, so the pattern should not be assumed to apply universally. See the University of Cambridge release.
Does visiting a coast or lake improve mental well-being?
This study does not answer that question. Its experimental finding concerns the effect of recalling a nostalgic place compared with a control condition. It did not test whether visiting a waterfront produces the same responses, whether water views cause nostalgia, or whether nature exposure treats a mental-health condition.

A personally meaningful place may matter because of the memories associated with it, not just its landscape. The study’s findings offer no basis for promising that a trip or a view will produce the measured effects for an individual.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What might the findings mean for local places?
The University of Cambridge release discusses preserving locally meaningful landmarks and involving communities in urban-planning decisions. That is a planning implication raised by the researchers, not a policy outcome tested by the experiments. Dr Elisabeta Militaru, who led the research during her PhD at Cambridge, said: “Communities need to be involved in urban planning decisions implemented in their neighbourhoods. Only then can we identify the local landmarks that need to be preserved.”
