Make a costume beard either by attaching crepe wool directly to skin with spirit gum or by building the hair onto a removable latex backing. The first lets you place hair directly where you want it; the second creates a separate piece to secure with string or adhesive. Choose based on the construction and attachment directions for the materials you use and the wearer’s known allergies or sensitivities.

The cited sources do not compare these methods for realism, comfort, durability, cost, or wear time, so there is no evidence-based performance winner.
Gather the materials
- Crepe wool, also called crepe hair, the theatrical hair used to make up the beard. Theatre House’s resources and education page includes beard-making instruction and spirit gum.
- Sharp scissors for trimming; a small brush is included in the cited costume tutorial.
- For the skin-applied method: spirit gum and the remover specified for that adhesive.
- For the removable-base method described in the tutorial: liquid latex, plastic wrap, and string.
- Optional: a main hair shade plus a highlight and lowlight for a blended look. This is an aesthetic option, not a requirement.
Make a removable latex-backed beard
- Plan the outline. Decide the beard’s shape and how it will be held in place. The cited tutorial describes string or spirit gum as attachment options.
- Prepare the hair. Loosen the crepe wool braid as directed by the tutorial. If you want a multitone effect, blend a main shade with optional highlight and lowlight strands.
- Build the backing. Use the tutorial’s plastic-wrap and liquid-latex approach to form a base, then add the crepe hair gradually to create the beard shape. Follow the product’s own instructions for handling and use.
- Finish the piece. Once constructed, peel the beard away from its backing as described in the tutorial. Attach it with string or spirit gum according to the chosen product’s directions, then trim and shape with scissors.
This is one documented construction example, not a guarantee that a latex base or a particular attachment method will suit every wearer.

Apply crepe hair directly with spirit gum
- Prepare the skin. Ben Nye directs users of its spirit gum to apply it to clean, dry skin. Product formulations and directions can vary, so read the label for the adhesive you have.
- Apply adhesive in sections. Tap the spirit gum until tacky, then work on a small area at a time. Ben Nye specifically recommends applying a large beard in sections.
- Add small tufts. Press short amounts of crepe hair into the tacky adhesive, gradually shaping the beard. The eHow tutorial’s example works from beneath the chin upward and then along the cheeks; treat this as one possible placement sequence, not a universal rule.
- Trim and shape. Use sharp scissors to refine the outline and length once the hair is placed.
Use and remove adhesives carefully
- Follow the specific product label. Ben Nye warns that its spirit gum is flammable, calls for use in a well-ventilated area, says to keep it away from children, and says not to apply it to eyelashes. Ben Nye spirit gum directions
- Use the adhesive’s designated remover and loosen the beard gently rather than pulling it off. Graftobian also advises stopping if removal causes discomfort or pain. Graftobian spirit gum directions
