PNG is the better default for most digital images: it preserves image data with lossless compression, supports dependable transparency, and is generally more space-efficient than the common uncompressed BMP file. Choose BMP when a legacy Windows app, device, or documented workflow specifically requires it. For photographs, vector artwork, or editable painting projects, another format may fit better.

BMP vs PNG at a glance

What matters BMP PNG Practical choice
Compression Commonly uncompressed, though BMP variants can use compression. Lossless compression; filtering helps reduce size without changing encoded pixel values. PNG for compact lossless output.
Typical file size Often large in the common uncompressed form. Usually smaller for graphics, especially flat-color images and screenshots; actual size depends on content and encoding. Usually PNG.
Transparency Some variants can carry alpha data, but application support is inconsistent. Established support for per-pixel transparency, including partial transparency. PNG.
Web graphics Can display in major browsers, but often wastes bandwidth. Broadly supported and suitable for lossless graphics and transparent assets. PNG for this use; consider WebP or SVG where appropriate.
Photographs Usually inefficient for delivery. Preserves pixels but can be large. Usually JPEG, WebP, or AVIF for delivery.
Screenshots, diagrams, and text Can preserve pixels but is often bulky. Retains crisp edges and avoids lossy compression artifacts. PNG.
Legacy Windows workflow Use when the receiving application or device explicitly calls for BMP. Supported by many modern Windows applications, but may not work with older systems. Follow the receiving system’s requirement.
Editable painting or design master Does not preserve layers or application editing features. Typically a flattened raster export, not a layered project. Use the native project format, PSD/PSB, or a suitable TIFF workflow.

Microsoft documents multiple BMP headers, pixel layouts, and compression fields, so “BMP is uncompressed” describes the common case rather than every valid BMP. PNG’s design and capabilities are specified by the W3C PNG specification; Microsoft documents BMP structures in its bitmap storage reference. For browser suitability and format guidance, see MDN’s image-format guide.

What BMP and PNG actually store

BMP: a Windows-associated pixel bitmap

BMP, short for Bitmap Image File, stores a rectangular raster grid of pixels. Depending on the variant, its file can describe dimensions, resolution, color depth, palette data, and compression. Many familiar BMP files store pixel data without compression, which makes their structure straightforward but their files large. Less-common variants differ in their headers and capabilities, and not every program handles those variations consistently.

  • Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty

That combination makes BMP most useful when a particular Windows-era application, device, API, or specialized pipeline expects it—not as a general-purpose format to choose by habit.

PNG: a portable lossless raster format

PNG means Portable Network Graphics. It uses lossless compression and supports indexed color, grayscale, and truecolor RGB, with transparency options including alpha channels. Depending on color type, PNG supports sample depths from 1 to 16 bits, as well as metadata chunks and optional interlacing. The format was designed for portable storage and online viewing.

Lossless means that decoding the encoded image data can reproduce those stored values exactly. It does not mean a PNG can recover detail that was lost earlier, preserve every feature of a layered painting project, or prevent changes made during export.

Quality: a larger BMP is not automatically better

If a BMP and PNG contain the same dimensions, color values, and channels, they can look identical. PNG’s compression reduces file size without the JPEG-style loss of image information; its filtering changes how data is prepared for compression, not the decoded pixels. BMP’s size is not evidence of extra image detail.

Export steps can still change the result in either format. Resizing, converting color modes, reducing bit depth, changing profiles, flattening transparency, or compositing against a background can alter the image. Converting a JPEG to PNG does not undo the JPEG’s earlier artifacts. Likewise, exporting a layered painting as PNG generally creates a flattened image rather than retaining editable layers and effects; Adobe identifies PSD and PSB as formats for preserving Photoshop-specific editing features in its format support guide.

File size: why PNG usually wins over common BMP

For a common uncompressed 24-bit BMP, pixel data is roughly three bytes per pixel before headers and row padding; a 32-bit BMP commonly uses roughly four. These are approximate storage models, not rules for every BMP variant. PNG size varies with dimensions, color type, palette use, image complexity, noise, transparency, and encoder settings.

  • Flat-color art and screenshots: repeated colors, clean edges, and large uniform regions often compress efficiently in PNG.
  • Noisy photographs or textured paintings: PNG may remain large because there is less repetition for lossless compression to exploit.
  • Different BMP variants: a compressed BMP is not equivalent in size to a common uncompressed BMP.

So the practical claim is not that PNG is always smaller: it is generally more space-efficient than the common uncompressed BMP representation, particularly for screenshots and graphics.

Transparency: use PNG for reliable alpha workflows

PNG supports per-pixel alpha, from fully transparent through partially transparent to fully opaque. That makes it the safer choice for transparent logos, icons, cut-outs, overlays, and painting elements intended for compositing. PNG stores alpha as non-premultiplied data, which can retain color information behind transparent pixels.

Some BMP representations carry alpha-related data, but software may ignore it or interpret it differently. MDN notes that uncommon BMP features are often poorly implemented or unsupported in practice. If a transparent edge develops a light or dark halo, the cause may be earlier compositing against a matte color, premultiplied-alpha handling, or an application that mishandles alpha—not simply the choice of PNG extension.

Which format fits your image or painting workflow?

Use PNG for screenshots, text, diagrams, and crisp digital art

PNG is a strong choice for interface captures, charts, diagrams, lettering, icons, and many digital illustrations. These images often have sharp boundaries and flat regions where lossless compression is useful; lossy artifacts around text and edges can be conspicuous. PNG also works well when the art needs transparency.

Use PNG or SVG for a web logo or icon

For a fixed-pixel logo with transparency, PNG is a practical option. If the original artwork is vector-based and should scale cleanly to different sizes, SVG is often more suitable. PNG is not a substitute for vector artwork when resolution independence matters.

Use JPEG, WebP, or AVIF for many photographs

For photographic delivery, PNG can preserve every encoded pixel but may be unnecessarily large, while common BMP is usually less efficient still. JPEG is a longstanding choice when smaller files matter more than perfect pixel preservation. WebP and AVIF can offer useful compression and transparency options for modern web delivery, but check the target applications and provide fallbacks where necessary. MDN discusses these formats and compatibility considerations in its image-format guide and multimedia performance guide.

Use BMP only when the workflow calls for BMP

Choose BMP when an older Windows application, a device, or a documented interface explicitly requires it, or when a specialized process depends on a particular BMP layout. “Windows-compatible” does not mean BMP is the best choice for every Windows task: Microsoft’s Windows Imaging Component lists both BMP and PNG among supported formats, and modern software commonly reads PNG too. See the Windows Imaging Component overview.

Keep an editable master in an editable format

Neither BMP nor PNG is a replacement for a layered painting file. Keep the application’s native project file when you need editable layers and effects; in Photoshop workflows, PSD or PSB is intended to retain those features. TIFF can suit some high-quality raster and print workflows, but the appropriate master format depends on the application and production requirements.

Converting BMP to PNG or PNG to BMP

ImageMagick provides local command-line conversion and image inspection. These examples use its magick command; see the ImageMagick format documentation for format support.

Convert one file

magick input.bmp output.png
magick input.png output.bmp

A conversion can preserve pixel values when the input is decoded correctly and the output retains the required color depth and channels. It is not guaranteed if conversion also resizes, reduces a palette, changes color space or bit depth, or mishandles alpha. PNG-to-BMP conversion may also produce a much larger file and does not carry across PNG-specific structures such as its chunk-based metadata and interlacing.

Convert a batch without writing beside the originals

mkdir png-output
magick mogrify -path png-output -format png *.bmp

The -path option directs output to the separate folder. Without it, mogrify can overwrite source files when modifying them in place; keep a backup and check the output before deleting originals.

Inspect an image before relying on it

magick identify -verbose input.png

Inspection can show dimensions, depth, channels, and metadata. Do not assume a conversion preserves every profile, metadata field, or unusual bit depth: behavior depends on the source, ImageMagick build, and output settings. For print, pixel dimensions describe the actual raster detail; resolution metadata such as DPI/PPI affects how software interprets print size, not how many pixels the image contains. PNG resolution metadata may also be represented in pixels per centimeter; see ImageMagick’s PNG format notes.

Export from Photoshop

  1. Open the image and choose File > Export > Save for Web.
  2. Choose an available output format such as PNG or JPEG, adjust the available options, and preview the file size.
  3. Select Save and choose the destination.

Adobe documents this workflow in its Save for Web instructions. The exact available controls depend on Photoshop version and image properties.

Quick decision checklist

  • Transparent background or crisp text and edges? Choose PNG.
  • Photograph for compact delivery? Consider JPEG, WebP, or AVIF, based on quality and compatibility needs.
  • Vector logo or icon that must scale? Prefer SVG when you have vector artwork.
  • Old application or device specifically asks for BMP? Use the BMP variant it supports.
  • Need layers and editable painting instructions? Save the project in its native format or a suitable layered/master format; export PNG separately for viewing or sharing.
