In ibisPaint, you can add shared brushes in two main ways: install one from the Brush window’s Online section, or import a brush QR-code image. Either way, the brush appears under Custom. “Download” usually does not mean getting a conventional .abr or standalone brush file.
What “downloading a brush” means in ibisPaint
There are a few different things a brush-related post or menu can refer to:
- Built-in brushes are already included in the app.
- Online Gallery brushes are custom brushes you can install from ibisPaint’s Brush window.
- QR-code brushes are custom brushes shared as QR-code images that ibisPaint can import.
- Original brush patterns are custom patterns used in brush behavior. Importing these patterns has plan-specific limits; that is different from a universal limit on installing brushes.
The documented sharing routes are the Online Gallery and brush QR codes—not a general system for importing any .abr or other third-party brush file. See ibisPaint’s brush QR-code feature description.

- Use ibisPaint or ibisPaint X on a supported device. ibisPaint lists iPhone/iPad, Android, Windows, and Mac versions; its mobile page lists iOS/iPadOS 15 or later and Android 7 or later. Availability and features can differ by platform. Check the official product and compatibility page.
- For an Online Gallery brush, find an entry with an actual brush installation control. Not every artwork or gallery post is an installable brush.
- For QR-code import, have the brush QR image saved in your device’s photo library and allow ibisPaint to access it if prompted.
- Update the app if possible. Menu labels and layouts can vary by platform and version; ibisPaint’s news page lists version updates.
Install a brush from the Online Gallery
- Open an artwork in ibisPaint, or create one.
- Open the Brush window.
- Select Online.
- Browse for a brush and open an entry that offers brush installation.
- Tap Install Brush and confirm if the app asks.
- Return to the brush list, select Custom, and choose the new brush.
- Test it on a blank layer before using it on finished artwork.
ibisPaint’s official brush tutorial documents the Online installation route and says installed brushes are added to Custom.

Import a brush from a QR-code image
- Get the brush QR code from the creator’s post, tutorial, message, or another authorized source.
- Save the image to your device’s photo library. If the code is displayed on the same phone or tablet, take a screenshot and save it.
- Open an artwork in ibisPaint and open the Brush window.
- Open the Brush window’s menu and choose Import Brush QR Code.
- Select the saved image and confirm the import.
- Open Custom in the brush list and test the imported brush on a blank layer.
The command and Custom destination are documented in the official tutorial; ibisPaint also describes QR-code import and export in its feature documentation.
When the QR code is on the same device
A screenshot is a practical option, and a creator’s ibisPaint Gallery instructions show a screenshot followed by QR-code import. Keep the whole code in frame, including all corners; crop only if the code remains complete. Avoid blur, filters, stickers, text overlays, and heavily compressed reposts. If it is too small to read, ask for a higher-resolution image or enlarge it before capturing. These steps are community guidance, not a guarantee that every screenshot will import. Move a brush to another device
- On the original device, open the Brush window, select the brush, open the menu, and choose Export Brush QR Code.
- Save the generated QR-code image and transfer it by email, messaging, or another method.
- Save the image to the destination device’s photo library.
- On that device, use Brush window → menu → Import Brush QR Code, then select the image.
- Find the brush under Custom.
This transfer follows ibisPaint’s documented QR export and import workflow; the exact controls may differ slightly across platforms.

Export and share a brush you made
- Open the Brush window and select your custom brush.
- Open the Brush menu and choose Export Brush QR Code.
- Save the generated image to your photo library.
- Share the image by email, messaging, or social media. Another ibisPaint user can import it using the QR-code steps above.
Exporting creates a shareable QR-code image; it does not automatically publish the brush in the Online Gallery. The brush tutorial and feature page describe QR-code sharing.
Publish a custom brush in the Online Gallery
Gallery publishing is a separate process from exporting a QR code. The official tutorial requires an artwork file and an ibisPaint login:
- Export your custom brush as a QR-code image.
- Prepare an artwork file, then import the QR-code image into that artwork from your photo library.
- Position and size the code in the artwork.
- Return to My Gallery, open Artwork Information, and tap Upload.
- Wait for the artwork to upload and for the custom brush to be released.

Customize or create a brush instead
Save an adjusted version of a brush
If you cannot find the exact brush you want, you can use a built-in brush as a starting point. Tap the + associated with the base brush, confirm adding it to custom brushes, adjust the available settings, and save the result as a custom brush. ibisPaint also documents reordering and deleting custom brushes. Create an original brush pattern
- From My Gallery, choose Create New, then select Brush Pattern.
- Choose a template brush and draw the pattern.
- Switch to Test Drawing and adjust the available brush settings, such as fade and shape.
- Return to My Gallery and register the tested brush as a custom brush when prompted.
ibisPaint says original artwork can be used as brush patterns, paper textures, and brush texture shapes. Its instructions are available in the brush-pattern tutorial and feature documentation.
Free plans, paid plans, and brush-pattern limits
You do not need Premium just to use the documented Online Gallery installation or QR-code workflow. The plan distinction to watch is specifically Import of Original Brush Patterns: ibisPaint’s mobile comparison lists up to five imports in the free ibisPaint X and paid mobile app tiers, and unlimited imports with Premium Membership. Its Windows/Mac comparison similarly lists up to five in the free tier and unlimited imports with Pro Upgrade or Premium Membership. Choose legitimate brushes and respect their terms
Prefer the ibisPaint Online Gallery or a creator’s authorized post. A QR code is a delivery method, not a license: check the creator’s terms before commercial use, keep attribution where requested, and do not present someone else’s brush as your own or redistribute it without permission.

Can I import a brush from a screenshot?
Yes, if the screenshot preserves the complete, clear brush QR code. Save it to your photo library and use Brush window → menu → Import Brush QR Code.

Open the Brush window and look under Custom.
Can I use an ibisPaint brush in another drawing app?
The documented brush-sharing workflow is for ibisPaint QR codes. The supplied official documentation does not establish general compatibility with other apps or .abr brush files.
Can I share a brush with a friend?
Yes. Export the brush as a QR-code image and send it to the other ibisPaint user, who can import it from the Brush window menu.
Can I make my own brush?
Yes. You can save a modified brush as a custom brush or create a Brush Pattern from My Gallery and register the tested result.
Is a brush QR code the same as a brush file?
It is an image-based method ibisPaint documents for sharing and importing brushes; it is not a promise of compatibility with conventional brush-file formats.
