Liubov Popova’s Spatial-Force Constructions are late easel experiments in making abstract painting feel like a material construction. Intersecting lines, geometric forms, and textured supports organize space as a field of tension, while the works remain paintings rather than a uniform set of sculptures.
Usually dated 1920–21, the series follows Popova’s Painterly Architectonics and points toward her later Constructivist teaching and applied design. MoMA quotes Popova describing these works as “a series of preliminary experiments leading to concrete material constructions.”
What are Liubov Popova’s Spatial-Force Constructions?
“Spatial-Force Construction” is a title associated with Popova’s late easel work. English sources also use “Space-Force” and “Spatial-Dynamic”; the names refer to related works, not necessarily to distinct movements. Museum records date the series to 1920–21, and the State Tretyakov Gallery lists individual works from 1921.

The change is not a simple switch from one fixed style to another: the later works give particular weight to line, intersecting forms, and the material character of the support.

MOMus relates Popova’s architectural interests to her studies of Russian and Islamic architecture and her colleague Aleksandr Vesnin. Its account describes architectonics as a dynamic relation among geometric form, volume, colour, and material. This is a way to understand how the pictures are organized, not evidence that they are architectural plans.
How the paintings make space feel active
Popova’s abstract forms do not simply sit on a neutral background. Intersecting lines and geometric shapes direct the eye and make the support feel like an organized, material field. MoMA’s exhibition overview describes her 1920–21 shift toward line rather than plane and colour as the primary concern.
Intersecting lines create tension
Lines cross and meet at different angles, setting up directional relationships across the support. Rather than representing a specific object, they organize the composition and create a sense of spatial force. MoMA’s artist essay describes the Spatial-Force Constructions as densely intersecting painted lines on plywood covered with wood dust.

Support and surface matter
The physical support is part of how these works operate. MoMA’s exhibition overview describes examples on plywood or cardboard, with surfaces textured using materials such as sand, metallic powders, or marble powders. These are series-level descriptions, not a recipe shared by every work: individual objects have different supports and media.
Popova’s own description, quoted by MoMA, calls the works preliminary experiments leading toward concrete material constructions. The paintings therefore test how abstract form can suggest construction while remaining easel works.
Between geometric abstraction and material construction
Popova’s Spatial-Force Constructions belong to the Russian avant-garde context that also included Suprematism and Constructivism. They should not be treated as straightforward illustrations of either Kazimir Malevich’s or Vladimir Tatlin’s program.

MoMA’s account of Popova’s 1917 Painterly Architectonic relates its geometric vocabulary to Malevich and its overlapping, materially suggestive forms to Tatlin’s relief constructions. These are useful contextual comparisons, not proof that Popova simply followed either artist. Her later works reflect her own synthesis of non-objective abstraction, material construction, and architectural thinking.

Popova’s broader Constructivist aim is also expressed in a statement quoted by MoMA: “Our new aim is the organization of the material environment, i.e., of contemporary industrial production, and all active artistic creativity must be directed towards this.” The statement describes a wider artistic program, not the function of every Spatial-Force work.
Different works, different materials
The title identifies a series, not one standardized object. The State Tretyakov Gallery records two separate 1921 works under the Russian title Пространственно-силовое построение:
Rank #4
- PREMIUM PAPER: Includes 75 sheets of heavyweight, acid-free paper; Sheets are thoughtfully perforated for final art

- VERSATILE: This sketch book for drawing is the perfect blank slate for all types of dry media such as pencils, colored pencils, and crayons
- TRUSTED BRAND: The UCreate brand is part of the Dixon Ticonderoga family of products and is beloved by children, parents, and teachers alike for its bold colors and superior durability
| Tretyakov inventory | Dimensions | Support and materials |
|---|---|---|
| RS-14452 | 34.2 × 28 cm | Brown cardboard; gouache, varnish, black pencil, and drafting tools |
| RS-11734 | 53 × 40 cm | Gray paper; graphite pencil, gouache, and varnish |
These records show why material details should be attached to a named object rather than generalized across the series. MoMA’s descriptions of plywood and textured surfaces remain useful for understanding examples it discusses, but they do not establish the materials of every Spatial-Force Construction.

The Spatial-Force Constructions belong to Popova’s last easel phase and help explain her turn toward Constructivist teaching and applied work. MoMA’s artist essay says she taught design in Vsevolod Meyerhold’s Theater Workshop and soon worked at the First State Textile Factory with Varvara Stepanova, producing designs for printed fabrics and other objects intended for mass production.

Why “breaking the plane” is a useful metaphor
“Breaking the plane” describes the effect of Popova’s work, not a literal event. Intersecting lines, geometric forms, and materially present supports make the picture feel like an experiment in construction. The paintings remain easel works, but they test how abstract painting might lead toward concrete material forms.
That tension helps place the series between Popova’s earlier Painterly Architectonics and her later Constructivist teaching and applied design. As MoMA’s account of Popova’s own description suggests, these works are best understood as experiments on the way to material construction—not as a uniform group of three-dimensional objects.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What materials did Popova use?
Materials vary by work. MoMA describes examples on plywood or cardboard and surfaces textured with materials such as sand and powders; Tretyakov records two 1921 works on brown cardboard and gray paper, respectively, with different media.
How do the Spatial-Force Constructions relate to Suprematism and Constructivism?
They share geometric abstraction with the avant-garde around Popova, but they are not simply Suprematist or Tatlin-style constructions. The works reflect Popova’s individual synthesis of abstraction, material construction, and architectural thinking, and precede her later Constructivist teaching and applied work.
