Bring back sprocket holes—not as a digital imitation of nostalgia, but as part of the image itself. Film perforations can turn the border from something hidden into a visible record of how the picture was made: frame, edge, and mechanism together.
Why sprocket holes belong in the image
Sprocket holes are perforations along film that engage with sprockets in equipment to move the film through it. Their mechanical purpose is transport; making them visible in a photograph or film frame gives that usually concealed edge a place in the composition.

That shift suits a painter’s way of looking. A border can be a boundary, but it can also be material: a mark of process, an irregular frame, or a counterpoint to the image inside it. Sprocket holes make the medium’s physical structure visible rather than pretending the picture arrived without one.

Analogue cameras made the edge part of the frame
Lomography says it launched the Sprocket Rocket in October 2010 as an analogue camera dedicated entirely to sprockets. The company’s history also records a White Sprocket Rocket edition in 2011 and a Teal edition in 2018. Those are product-history milestones, not confirmation that the camera is currently available; check Lomography or a retailer in your region before planning a purchase.
With a camera designed around the perforated edge, sprocket holes are not added ornament. They are part of the way the image is captured. That distinction matters if you want the actual film boundary, with the quirks of an analogue exposure, rather than a clean digital picture wearing a film border.

Altered film can make the frame a painted surface
Another route is to work directly on film. LBB reports that filmmaker Paul Bush let students paint, burn, bleach, or glue material to clear 16mm film while leaving its sprocket holes intact. The result treats the strip as both image area and object: marks can cross or transform the picture while the perforations remain legible as part of the medium.
Filmmaker Frank Lebon, quoted by LBB about physical film manipulation, said: “It represents something very important that’s not possible in the world of digital animation – embracing mistakes.” That is the appeal and the risk of working materially: an uneven mark or unexpected change is not necessarily a flaw to erase; it may become part of the work.

For this path, ask a film lab about its current intake conditions before sending altered material. Cinelab London co-founder and CEO Adrian Bull discusses scanning altered film in LBB’s feature, but that account does not establish whether a lab will accept a particular person’s work, process, or format today.

For a painting-led project, the choice is less about which look is most authentic than which process serves the image. Use analogue capture when the film edge should belong to the photograph’s making; alter film when physical gesture and uncertainty are central; choose a digital treatment when you need a designed border that can be adjusted without handling film.

Make the edge intentional
- Decide what the holes should do. They might act as a visible frame, a repeated rhythm, or a contrast with a dense painted or photographic image.
- Leave room for the whole strip. If the perforations are part of the composition, avoid cropping them away at the final presentation stage.
- Keep process and presentation distinct. A digitally drawn border can be a valid design choice, but it is different from exposing or scanning real film with its edge visible.
- Confirm practical details first. Camera stock and lab acceptance are not established by historical product or workflow accounts, so verify availability and handling with the relevant seller or lab.
