Dust first, then spot-test an inconspicuous area. If the paint has cured and the test dries without changing the color or sheen, wipe the mark gently with a well-wrung soft sponge or cloth and warm water. Use a little mild, non-abrasive detergent only if water is not enough, then wipe away residue with a separate clean damp cloth.
Before you clean: check the paint and let it cure
Follow care directions on the paint can or the manufacturer’s product page when available. “Water-based” does not guarantee that a wall is washable: the product, finish, age, cure state and type of mark all affect how it responds to moisture and rubbing.

Manufacturer guidance on when to wash varies. Sherwin-Williams advises waiting at least two weeks before washing painted walls in its painted-wall cleaning guidance. Its maintenance FAQ advises waiting at least 30 days before using cleaning agents on latex-painted walls. If the specific coating’s instructions are unavailable, waiting 30 days before using detergent is the more cautious choice; do not wash sooner than the product directions allow.
How to clean a water-based painted wall
- Remove loose dust. Use a clean dry cloth or a soft brush attachment. Dusting first helps keep loose particles from being rubbed across the paint.
- Test in a hidden spot. Dampen a soft sponge or cloth with water, wring it out thoroughly, and gently wipe a small inconspicuous area. If water alone is unlikely to remove the mark, test a small amount of mild, non-abrasive detergent diluted in warm water. Let the spot dry, then check for changes in color, sheen or water marks before cleaning a larger area.
- Wipe gently. Use the tested method on the mark with light pressure. Keep the sponge or cloth damp, not dripping; too much water can harm the finish or leave water marks. Sherwin-Williams recommends starting with the least abrasive option—water and a sponge or cloth, or the mildest detergent—and escalating only as needed (paint scrubbability guidance).
- Remove detergent residue. If you used detergent, wipe the area lightly with a separate clean damp cloth, then let it dry. Sherwin-Williams says a few drops of mild detergent in warm water can be used to clean painted walls (painted-wall cleaning guidance).
Choose the gentlest method that works
- Dust only: For loose dust, use a dry cloth or soft brush attachment rather than wetting the whole wall.
- Water: For a small mark, try a well-wrung damp sponge or cloth first.
- Mild detergent: If water does not remove the mark, use a small amount of mild, non-abrasive detergent in warm water after testing. Wipe away residue with clean water.
Flat and other less-scrubbable finishes can show wear more readily than finishes designed to withstand scrubbing. Avoid hard rubbing, especially if the finish is unknown. Do not use abrasive cleaners or ammonia-containing products. If the test or cleaning changes the paint’s color or sheen, stop; a stronger cleaner or more forceful scrubbing could make the damage worse.

Why a spot test matters
Water-based paints differ in product, finish and condition, so a method that works on one wall may leave marks or change the appearance of another. Testing the actual surface and letting it dry reveals more than judging it while wet. A soft cellulose sponge or clean cloth is sufficient; a special or branded cleaning tool is not required.
