To build a squid, choose the result you want: make a quick cut-and-paste paper craft, assemble a simple 3D model from a cardboard roll, or try a separate water-propulsion demonstration. A Te Papa online activity called “Build a Squid” has also been documented, but its current availability could not be confirmed.

For the least preparation, draw and cut a squid from paper. For a model with dimension, use the cardboard roll. Choose the propulsion activity only if you want to demonstrate movement as well as talk about squid.

Make a cut-and-paste paper squid
Printable listings describe squid crafts assembled by coloring, cutting and gluing. One listing says the template can be printed on regular paper or cardstock; cardstock is optional, not a requirement. Another describes colored and black-and-white cut-and-glue sheets, a coloring page and a picture of the finished project. Check the contents of the particular template you choose, since the listings do not establish one universal pattern or assembly order.
- Choose a printable squid template, or draw a simple squid shape on paper.
- Print on regular paper for a no-purchase option, or use cardstock if you want a sturdier cutout.
- Color the black-and-white version if desired, then cut out the pieces.
- Arrange the pieces into a squid shape and glue them together according to the template’s own layout.
For a simple original version, draw an oval mantle (the squid’s main body) and add arms and two longer feeding tentacles below it. Treat that as a drawing choice, not a universal template instruction.

Build a 3D squid from a cardboard roll
The University of Otago’s activity uses an empty toilet roll and rubber bands to make a basic hanging model. Its instructions call for ten holes around one end of the roll and rubber bands tied through them, with two bands longer than the rest.
- Make ten holes around one end of an empty toilet roll.
- Cut rubber bands open so each forms a length of elastic.
- Tie one end of a rubber-band length through each hole and let the lengths dangle. Make two longer than the others.
- Add paper fins and eyes if you want to decorate the model.
The activity uses eight arms and two longer feeding tentacles as an anatomy reference. You can use that detail when arranging the ten dangling bands, but the roll model is a craft rather than a precise anatomical or scale replica. Otago’s activity also raises a useful measurement distinction: squid size may mean mantle length alone or the full animal including arms; scientists usually report mantle length because it is more accurate.

Try the water-propulsion activity separately
Experiment Exchange / Curiosity Zone’s activity, credited July 20, 2016, uses water pushed backward to make a toy move forward. It is a demonstration inspired by squid propulsion, not an assembly method for either paper craft or cardboard-roll model.
- Gather a tub or pool, a balloon and a water-bottle nozzle.
- Fill the balloon with water and twist it closed.
- Stretch the balloon opening over the closed nozzle.
- Put the toy in the water, then open the nozzle.
The activity explains the forward movement as the reaction to water leaving backward, connecting the demonstration to Newton’s Third Law. Follow the source activity’s setup and use adult help where needed with preparing materials.

What happened to Te Papa’s “Build a Squid”?
NOAA’s education guide lists a Te Papa activity with the description: “Nothing but fun! Build your own squid, set it free, and then check out what yours and all the other squids have been up to.” That documents the concept of an online build-and-release activity, not its current operation.
