For a cardboard food truck kids can actually roll, build a small box-like body and add straw sleeves, dowel axles, and bottle-cap wheels. If the goal is pretend-play as a vendor, make a separate standing service window from a tri-fold display board instead. These are two different crafts with different play outcomes.
Choose the kind of food truck to make
Start by asking, “What would you serve if you ran a food truck?” The Children’s Museum of South Dakota’s activity invites children to choose the truck’s shape, number of windows, decorations, and menu location before drawing a plan. Its published instructions, dated October 21, 2021, are for a small wheeled model—not a ride-on toy. See the museum’s cardboard taco truck activity.

| Format | Best for | Construction | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolling model | Moving a small pretend truck around | Box-like cardboard body, straw axle sleeves, dowels or skewers, and four bottle-cap wheels | The museum’s instructions do not specify storage. |
| Standing service window | Vendor-and-customer role-play | Tri-fold display board, cutout window, counter, menu, decoration, and roof supports | Crayola says the board can fold for storage after the roof supports are removed. |
For the standing option, Crayola’s DIY Kids Taco Truck uses a different structure and includes modeled taco shells and fillings. Crayola recommends putting a sturdy object behind the standing truck for support.
Make a rolling cardboard truck
Gather the materials
- Paper and pencil for a sketch
- Cardboard
- Two plastic straws
- Two small wooden dowels or skewers that fit inside the straws
- Four plastic bottle caps of the same size
- Markers
- Scissors, packaging tape and/or hot glue
- Optional construction paper, yarn, foam, or other decorations
Build and decorate the body
- Draw the truck design, including its food, shape, windows, decorations, and menu location.
- Cut cardboard panels and join them with tape or glue to make a stable, box-like body. Another stable box shape is fine.
- Add triangular cardboard pieces inside the corners as braces. Decorate the body now if that makes the surfaces easier to reach.
Add the axles and wheels
- Attach one straw crosswise beneath the front of the body and one beneath the back. Each straw should extend a little beyond the truck’s width.
- Thread a dowel or skewer through each straw. An adult may need to trim the pieces to fit.
- Secure one matching bottle cap at each end of each axle.
- Set the model down and test its movement. Adjust the axles or wheels if they bind or sit unevenly.
The museum’s design is a model craft, and its instructions recommend testing movement. They do not establish that a homemade cardboard truck will roll smoothly in every build or support a child’s weight.

- Playful details include gas tank, illustrated food menus, drink display in cooler with flap that opens, sunroof with flap; includes double-sided reusable menu activity card, handy take-along storage tote, easy illustrated assembly instructions
- Extra big with room for multiple kids to play
- Great gift for budding young chefs, ages 3-6, for hands-on, screen-free play
Make a standing service-window truck instead
Use a tri-fold display board when the main activity is taking pretend orders and serving customers, rather than rolling the truck around. Crayola’s project adds a large service window, a painted counter, window trim and truck decoration, a written menu, and supports for a roof. Model Magic can be shaped into taco shells and fillings. Follow the project’s directions for drying and support; its board folds for storage once the roof supports are removed.
Do not combine the board’s window-and-roof directions with the wheeled box build as if they were one pattern. Pick the structure that fits the play, then adapt the decoration and menu to the child’s idea.

- So many kids smile when they hear that familiar summer sound of the ice cream truck's bells getting closer and closer.
- Little ones can decorate the playhouse with crayons or markers, and then make up their own games and play situations.
- Size: Assembled, 23 3/4" x 42 3/4" x 29 1/2". Simple assembly required.
- Cardboard.
- Simple assembly required.
Keep cutting and assembly supervised
For the tri-fold board craft, Crayola says an adult should cut the large rectangular service window and assist with the craft-knife step. For the rolling model, an adult should handle any craft-knife cuts and supervise assembly, particularly if hot glue or skewers are used. Children can sketch the truck, decorate it, help tape or glue parts, and test the small model with supervision.
Elmer’s describes its Build It Tools cardboard cutting tool as suitable for ages 6+ and says adult supervision is required. That guidance applies to that tool, not as a universal minimum age for making a cardboard food truck. The museum’s materials list does not require a special cutting tool; scissors and common craft supplies are listed. Read Elmer’s Build It Tools guidance.
