Build a button in Photoshop as an editable shape layer with a separate text layer, then style and export it. Rounded corners are still available through the Rectangle tool’s radius controls; the old Rounded Rectangle tool was removed in Photoshop 22.3 in March 2021. The layered file remains your source, while exported images are artwork—not interactive website controls.

Select the Rectangle tool and set its mode to Shape. Adobe says the tool creates “vector rectangles that remain editable and scalable.” Adobe’s Rectangle tool documentation explains the current controls.

Choose a fill color and, if the design needs a defined edge, set a stroke. Adjust the corner-radius controls to shape the corners. Photoshop removed the separate Rounded Rectangle tool in version 22.3, released in March 2021; use the Rectangle tool for rounded shapes instead.

Keep the rectangle as a shape layer. Its vector-based form lets you resize or recolor the button base without treating it as a fixed-pixel painting.

Add the label on its own layer
Choose the Type tool and create a separate text layer for the button wording. Center and align the label against the shape, then choose a size and color that remain legible at the intended display size. Separate layers let you revise the wording without rebuilding the shape, or adjust the base without changing the text. Adobe’s Add text and shapes guidance covers editable text and shape layers.
Choose a visual treatment
Use effects to support the button’s form and contrast, not simply to add decoration. Layer styles can supply strokes, shadows, and glows; gradients and separate highlights can create a more dimensional or glossy appearance. These are design options, not required settings. - Flat: A solid fill and restrained stroke keep the graphic simple and make its label the focus.
- Dimensional: A gradient overlay, shadow, or highlight can suggest depth. Keep the label distinct from the background.
- Glossy: A separate highlight and shading can suggest a glass-like surface. Treat the highlight as its own editable element so it can be adjusted independently.
There is no universally best proportion, corner radius, or finish. Judge the shape and label together at the size where the artwork will be used.
Keep the source editable and export only what you need

Save the layered working document in Photoshop format (PSD) before making flattened exports. Preserve the shape, text, and any highlight or shading layers as separate elements.

For a single static graphic, export an image for the intended use while retaining the PSD as the editable source. Adobe’s web graphics guidance describes exporting web artwork.

If you need alternate visual states, duplicate and align the button layers, then change the relevant style, visibility, position, or effects for each version. Export each state as a separate image. Adobe’s rollover documentation describes this separate-asset approach; it is historical guidance rather than a requirement to implement a modern website this way.

A Photoshop button image is not an interactive control
Photoshop creates the artwork. A website or application must implement the control separately in HTML/CSS or its application layer, including behavior such as hover, focus, and activation. Exported state images can be used as assets, but an image alone does not provide interaction or accessible behavior.
