You can make a simple edge-lit sign with an acrylic offcut, scrap wood, a salvaged bracket and a compatible 12V LED strip. Scratch lettering into the acrylic, then align its lower edge with the strip so light enters the panel and catches the marks. The reported build uses a printed template and razor blade for its lettering—no laser or CNC router required for straightforward text.
What you need for the scrap-pile version
The featured project, reported by Tom Nardi at Hackaday in 2022, brings together four functional parts:
- Acrylic panel: the transparent sign face, with lettering scratched into it.
- 12V linear LED strip: mounted along the wood so its light enters an edge of the panel. The project report says the continuous line gives more consistent light than traditional strips with separated LEDs.
- Scrap-wood base: a platform for the strip.
- Upright support: a salvaged angle bracket holds the panel at the strip’s center line.
Start by looking for suitable acrylic and a stable base and support. If you need to buy anything, the light source and a power supply compatible with its specifications may be the hardest parts to find. The report does not identify a strip brand, length, brightness, current draw or power supply, so those details must come from the strip you choose.
#1 Best Overall
- Package Includes: each set includes 24 pieces of transparent acrylic boards and 24 pieces of 3D night LED light lamp holders, with 24 pieces charging cables and 24 pieces remote controls; The quantity is enough for you to use as a daily decoration, night light or as a gift for your family and friends
- 16 Color Changing and 4 Modes: the acrylic light base are equipped with portable remote control, which has 16 static color light and 4 modes (flash, strobe, fade, smooth), touch the switch or use the equipped portable remote control to control the change of colors and choose different flashing modes, bright colors can better display the acrylic art
- USB and Battery Powered: the 3D night LED lamp base has 2 power supply methods, which can be powered by the 3 AA batteries (not included) that fit into the bottom of the base, or use the included USB cable to power, which is convenient and effortless to use
- DIY Crafts: the sheet is made of 4mm thick quality acrylic with good scratch resistance, which is good for engraving, using the sculpting pen or brush, you can create different style pictures on this transparent acrylic plate; Please tear off the protective film on both sides of the acrylic board before use to achieve better effect
- Wide Application: 3D night LED light lamp base can be applied to make your DIY acrylic artwork, applied as beautiful home decoration or wonderful gift for friends and family; And can also be applied as a special night light to make the room warm and dreamy, suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, bars, shops, cafes, restaurants, offices and so on
For a tidier or more protected build, a base or enclosure can hide the wiring and LEDs. Full Spectrum Laser’s Edge Lit Acrylic Light guide includes a base, LED strip and power supply; a separate Hackster project uses a plywood enclosure and support brackets. These are optional refinements, not requirements for the improvised design.
How to assemble and align the sign
- Prepare the base. Choose a piece of scrap wood wide and stable enough to support the panel and LED strip. Decide where the panel’s bottom edge will sit.
- Attach the strip. Mount the 12V linear strip on the wood where its light can enter the acrylic edge. Follow the strip maker’s mounting and connection instructions.
- Fit the support. Secure a bracket or another upright support so the panel can stand at the strip’s center line. The featured build reused an angle bracket from an old Meccano set.
- Align the acrylic. Set the panel’s edge over the strip and check that it is held steadily and receives light along the intended edge. The Hackaday report gives no dimensions, so position depends on the panel, strip and support you have.
- Connect a compatible supply. Match the supply’s voltage to the strip and make sure it can provide the current the strip requires. Check the chosen product’s specifications rather than assuming a supply from another LED project will work.
The sources do not report measured brightness or a controlled performance comparison for this sign. Treat the stated advantage of the continuous strip as the project author’s explanation, not a quantified test result.
Rank #2
- DURABLE. Signs are made from 118 mil thick acrylic and can withstand abuse. Sign's message is directly printed on the material providing extra durability.
- PROJECTING SIGN. Signs are noticeable in both directions. In an emergency, makes it easy to locate first aid equipment, evacuation routes and exits. Signs are suitable both indoors and outdoors.
- EASY TO INSTALL. Signs have a flange with pre-drilled holes for easy installation. Projecting signs come with mounting kit for fast installation. All signs include screws and adhesive tape.
- SIGNS ARE GREAT AREA MARKERS. Some spills can be highly dangerous and lead to injuries so post this Spill Response Kit Sign so it can be found immediately.
Mark simple lettering without a laser
For a word or blocky lettering, the reported low-equipment method is to print a template, align or transfer it to the acrylic, then scratch the letters with a razor blade. Nardi notes that a steady hand matters and that the example’s display-style font suits hand cutting. He also cautions that this approach is less suitable for complicated artwork: “Now you might think you’d need something like a CNC router to produce a sign like this, and for more complex images, that’s arguably the case.”
Work carefully with the blade and keep your fingers out of its path. The source describes the method but does not give a detailed template-transfer procedure, blade technique or safety protocol; choose a method you can control and secure the panel before marking it.

Choose another marking method for detailed artwork
If the design has fine detail or curves that are difficult to scratch consistently, the equipment choice depends on the artwork and what you can access. Adafruit’s LED Acrylic Sign guide describes laser engraving, CNC milling and a hand-held rotary tool with an engraving bit. Full Spectrum Laser’s project guide demonstrates vector cutting and engraving. These are alternatives, not prerequisites for making a text sign.
- Hand-scratched text: the simplest documented option for basic lettering; it relies on careful manual work and is a poor fit for intricate images.
- Rotary engraving: an option for more control when you have a rotary tool and a suitable engraving bit.
- CNC or laser: alternatives for more elaborate designs when the equipment is available; they require machine access and appropriate operating procedures.
Adafruit also describes light-guide acrylic containing light-diffusing particles as a material option for even illumination. That purpose-made stock may suit a new-material build, but the scrap-pile example does not establish that it used specialty acrylic. Use an appropriate clear offcut if you have one; the sources do not compare ordinary and light-guide acrylic in controlled tests.

Match the LED strip and power supply
The featured sign uses a 12V linear LED strip. Its author chose a continuous band of light over strips with separate LED points for more consistent illumination. The report does not state the strip’s electrical load or the supply used, so check the exact voltage and current requirements for your own strip.
Other documented builds use different lighting and power arrangements, which are not interchangeable by default:

| Documented setup | Lighting and power details | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| Hackaday scrap-pile sign | 12V linear LED strip; supply details not stated in the report. | Match a supply to the selected strip’s voltage and current requirements. |
| Hackster Basic Edge Lit Acrylic Sign | WS2812B strip and controller with USB power; the author cautions that the supply must provide sufficient current and suggests brighter or denser strips for larger signs. | This is a different configuration, not evidence that USB powers the featured 12V strip. The project notes its original strip/controller may no longer be available. |
| Full Spectrum Laser Edge Lit Acrylic Light | Lists an LED strip and power supply; the design can use battery or plug power. | Those are options in that project guide, not a specification for the scrap-pile build. |
Laser safety applies only if you choose a laser
The hand-scratched approach needs no laser. If you use one for cutting or engraving, follow the machine maker’s safety procedure. Full Spectrum Laser advises checking exhaust, airflow, cooling, material settings and focus, keeping a fire extinguisher available, and never leaving a job unattended.
