AllPeopleQuilt’s pattern makes four lined, flat-bottom treat bags, each 4 × 4 × 2 inches, from two contrasting 18 × 22-inch fat quarters. It uses grosgrain ribbon for handles and leaves an opening in the lining for turning. The pattern is credited to Monica Solorio-Snow of Happy Zombie and is presented as a Halloween favor project, though the same small-gift format works for other occasions.
Materials and pattern specifications
The quantities below are those listed in the AllPeopleQuilt pattern, updated August 22, 2025. The pattern says its cutting instructions are based on 42 inches of usable fabric width and include 1/4-inch seam allowances.

- Two contrasting novelty-print fat quarters, each 18 × 22 inches: one light and one dark.
- Four 12-inch lengths of 3/8-inch grosgrain ribbon, described as orange and black.
- Basic sewing supplies, including thread, pins, scissors or a rotary cutter, and an iron.
The pattern’s cutting layout uses multiple rectangles from each fat quarter, joined into contrasting panels. Follow its cutting diagram and piece counts for the exact rectangles; the finished set is four bags, with two in each reversed light-and-dark combination.
How to sew the lined treat bags
- Cut and pair the fabric. Cut the rectangles according to the AllPeopleQuilt pattern. Join contrasting pieces to form the bag panels, arranging the light and dark prints so the two colorways can be reversed.
- Prepare the ribbon handles. Cut each 12-inch ribbon length in half to make two 6-inch pieces. On the right side of a panel, pin the ends of a handle 2 inches in from the side edges, keeping the handle loop between the ends. Repeat for the remaining panels.
- Attach the linings. Join each bag panel to its lining along one long edge. Prepare a second matching unit as directed by the pattern.
- Sew the units together. Place the units right sides together and stitch around the edges, leaving a 3-inch opening along the lining edge for turning.
- Form the flat bottom. Match each bottom seam to its corresponding side seam to form a corner triangle. Stitch across the triangle, then trim it while retaining a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Repeat at the other bottom corner.
- Turn and finish. Turn the bag right side out through the lining opening. Close the opening with a slip stitch, tuck the lining inside, and press the top edge.
- Make the second colorway. Reverse which print is used for the bag and lining to create the contrasting version.
Using fabric strips instead of ribbon
Designer Monica Solorio-Snow described a fabric-strip handle alternative in a September 17, 2010 post about the project’s appearance in the Fall 2010 issue of Quilts & More. Her variation uses 3-inch-wide fabric strips folded inward, finished to 3/4 inch, and edge-stitched. This is a designer-described option rather than a change to the AllPeopleQuilt pattern’s ribbon instructions. See Solorio-Snow’s Tiny Treats post for that variation.

What the finished project is suited for
The bags are small, reusable containers for party favors, Halloween treats, or other small gifts. Their stated 4 × 4 × 2-inch finished dimensions describe a compact bag with a flat base; choose favors that fit those dimensions. The pattern does not establish durability, wash performance, or comparative construction difficulty for different fabrics or handle materials.
