Choose a business card template only after confirming the finished size required by your market and printer. Then customize it in an editor that fits your workflow, keep essential details inside the safe area, and follow the printer’s bleed and export requirements. Canva and Adobe Express offer template-based editing; Canva and Adobe Express also describe print-ordering options, while Adobe’s InDesign tutorial explains how to export a print PDF.

Business card dimensions vary by region, so start with the printer’s required finished size rather than assuming one format works everywhere. Canva lists 3.5 × 2 inches for the United States and Canada, and 3.35 × 2.17 inches for the UK and several European countries. Canva’s guide documents regional variation; it is not a universal international standard. Canva’s business card size guide provides examples.

Once you know the trim size, choose a template designed for those dimensions or set up a custom canvas. Before ordering, check that the exported file and any template dimensions match the selected printer’s specifications.

Customize the design without creating trim problems
Use bleed when artwork reaches the edge
For a full-bleed background or image, extend the artwork beyond the finished edge so small trimming variations are less likely to leave a white border. Canva defines bleed as the area extending beyond the edge of the design and gives a default of 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) per side for products that are trimmed or cut. That is Canva’s default, not a universal printer requirement; use the selected provider’s current specification if it differs. Canva’s guide to margins, bleed, rulers, and crop marks
Keep essential details inside the safe area
Place names, contact information, logos, and other important elements well inside the printer’s safe zone. A background may extend through the bleed, but critical content should not sit at the trim edge. Review the print preview or proof at actual size to check legibility and placement before approving an order. Canva’s card guidance discusses printing and design checks. Canva business cards

Choose paper and finish for the intended feel
Paper weight and finish are options to compare, not one-size-fits-all requirements. Consider what the printer supports, the feel you want, and the cost. Canva says thickness depends on the selected paper and finish. Its Australia page lists 240–325 gsm as standard, 325–350 gsm as mid-weight premium, and 650 gsm as deluxe options; these are descriptions on that regional page, not universal industry categories. Printable business card stock or perforated sheets may suit a home-printing workflow, but check the paper package and your printer documentation for sheet dimensions, supported media, and inkjet or laser compatibility. Do not assume a template or listing will work with a particular printer; compatibility depends on the product and device. The selected template must also align with the sheet’s card layout and the finished dimensions you need.

Pre-order checklist
