Yes. Lunar New Year began on 29 January 2025, marking the start of the Year of the Wood Snake in the Chinese zodiac. Snake-year symbolism includes both danger and auspicious ideas such as wisdom, renewal and prosperity, but these are cultural interpretations—not a reliable forecast of anyone’s luck. The holiday has passed; this guide explains what the 2025 designation meant and how traditions vary.
When did the 2025 Year of the Snake start?
Lunar New Year began on 29 January 2025. The University of Sydney identifies that date as the start of the Chinese lunisolar year of the Wood Snake, as does The Open University’s explanation of the Spring Festival. The traditional Spring Festival season runs from the first day of the first lunar month through the fifteenth, which is observed as the Lantern Festival. (University of Sydney; The Open University)

What is the Year of the Wood Snake?
The Chinese zodiac follows a repeating sequence of 12 animals, with the Snake in sixth place. The year’s stem-branch designation is Yi-Si (乙巳): the University of Sydney describes Yi as Wood and Si as Fire, and uses “Wood Snake” for 2025. The animal sequence sits within a broader traditional system that combines the zodiac with five elements in a 60-year cycle. These are calendar and cultural classifications, not scientific categories. (University of Sydney)
What does the Year of the Snake mean?
There is no single interpretation shared by everyone. Professor Xiaohuan Zhao of the University of Sydney describes a contrast in Chinese symbolism: snakes can suggest darkness or danger, but in some traditions they are called “little dragons.” The shedding of a snake’s skin is associated with good luck, rebirth and regality. Other associations cited in the same account include love, happiness, wealth, wisdom and longevity. (University of Sydney)

The Open University’s Chinese-language explainer adds wisdom, intelligence, mystery, charm, intuition and resourcefulness to its account of Snake symbolism. Zodiac personality descriptions should be understood as traditional beliefs, not as evidence that a person’s birth year determines their character or fate. (The Open University)
What brings good luck in the Year of the Snake?
There is no established evidence that a particular color, food, decoration or zodiac sign causes good fortune. “Good luck” in this context refers to beliefs and customs people may choose to observe, not a verifiable prediction. Is Lunar New Year celebrated the same way everywhere?
No. “Lunar New Year” is a broad term for observances that have distinct names, calendars and customs. The Associated Press notes that the celebration is called Spring Festival in China, Tết in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea, and that practices differ across regions and communities. Zodiac animals can differ too: the Vietnamese zodiac uses the Cat in place of the Rabbit and the buffalo in place of the Ox. A Chinese zodiac description should not be assumed to represent every Lunar New Year tradition. (Associated Press)

What did the Year of the Snake symbolize beyond zodiac traditions?
In a 23 January 2025 ceremonial statement, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said: “The Year of the Snake represents opportunities for life-changing transformation and a rebirth; it represents resilience and the ability to overcome challenges.” This is his interpretation for the occasion, not scientific evidence that 2025—or any year—produces those outcomes. The statement also attributed to UNESCO the December 2024 addition of “Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional New Year” to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
