CAD-style sketching is available in Blender through CAD Sketcher, a free, open-source third-party extension. It adds constraint-based 2D sketches, dimensions, angles, tangents, and equal relationships to Blender. It does not turn Blender itself into a complete mechanical-CAD application.
The distinction matters: CAD Sketcher can bridge accurate design and Blender’s modeling, materials, rendering, and procedural tools, but it remains an experimental work in progress rather than a replacement for FreeCAD, Fusion, SolidWorks, Onshape, or another dedicated CAD system.
What “CAD in Blender” actually means
The original 2022 headline referred to CAD Sketcher, a community-developed Blender extension. Early coverage presented it as an experimental project bringing constraint-driven sketching into Blender—not as an official Blender feature or a new Blender edition.

What CAD Sketcher adds
CAD Sketcher lets you create editable 2D sketches and define relationships between their elements. Documented constraint examples include:
- Distance: controls a measurable length, radius, or other dimension.
- Angle: controls the angular relationship between elements.
- Tangent: keeps curves or lines tangent.
- Equal: makes selected geometry share a value or relationship.
Instead of manually moving every vertex when a design changes, you can revise a dimension or relationship and let the solver adjust the sketch. A constrained profile can then serve as the starting point for further Blender modeling or visualization.
This is parametric in the limited, important sense of constraint-driven sketching. It should not automatically be understood as a complete feature-based mechanical-CAD history with assemblies, mates, drawings, design tables, engineering analysis, and manufacturing documentation.

Constraint-driven sketching, explained
A sketch has degrees of freedom: points may still move, lines may still rotate, and dimensions may still change. Constraints progressively control those freedoms.
- Under-constrained: some motion or dimensions remain free.
- Fully constrained: the available degrees of freedom have been controlled.
- Over-constrained: constraints conflict or redundantly describe the same relationship.
A solver can only find a valid result when the constraint system is logically consistent. If a sketch suddenly distorts or refuses to solve, undo the most recent constraint, inspect redundant relationships, and check the sketch plane and selected entities.
Who should use it?
CAD Sketcher is most attractive to Blender users who occasionally need accurate profiles without leaving Blender. It can suit:
- 3D-printing hobbyists making simple dimension-driven parts.
- Makers designing brackets, plates, panels, housings, and enclosures.
- Product-visualization artists who need precise base geometry before materials and rendering.
- Designers combining constrained layouts with Blender’s artistic and procedural tools.
- CAD users who want to bring a controlled sketch into Blender for visual development.
It is a poorer fit for production engineering, large assemblies, formal drawings, manufacturing-ready STEP, DWG, or IGES workflows, revision-controlled product data, or any project where experimental software is unacceptable.

How to install CAD Sketcher
The current project documentation lists Blender 4.2 as the minimum version. Compatibility can change, so check the project README and release information before installing.
- Download the CAD Sketcher extension ZIP from the project’s GitHub project or release page.
- Keep the archive compressed. Do not unpack it.
- Open Blender and choose Edit → Preferences.
- Open Get Extensions.
- Open the extension settings menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Install from Disk….
- Select the downloaded ZIP and complete the installation.
- In the 3D Viewport, press N if the sidebar is hidden, then open the Sketcher tab.
On macOS, a browser may automatically extract a downloaded ZIP. Confirm that the file you select is still a ZIP archive. If installation fails, verify the Blender version, download the latest compatible release again, reinstall through Install from Disk…, and restart Blender. The official installation guide is the authority for release-specific changes.
A sensible first project
Start with a small test file rather than an important production model:

- Save a new Blender file and make a backup copy.
- Open the Sketcher tab and create a sketch plane.
- Draw a simple rectangle, or try a profile made from lines and an arc.
- Add dimensional constraints for key lengths or radii.
- Add geometric relationships such as horizontal, vertical, equal, or tangent where available.
- Change one dimension and observe how the sketch updates.
- Use the resulting sketch in a simple Blender modeling operation.
- Save a new version before adding modifiers or more complex geometry.
Tool names and panel locations can vary between releases. For the current sequence, use the project’s getting-started guide rather than relying on older 2022 tutorials.

Before trusting any measurement, verify Blender’s scene units and the measurement system required by your target workflow. Numerical precision inside a scene is not the same as manufacturing validation.

A constrained sketch can be dimensionally controlled while the final object still has invalid or non-manifold geometry, unsuitable wall thickness, incorrect clearances, misunderstood units, or unverified tolerances. Export can also lose design intent.
Dedicated CAD is usually the better choice when you need:
- Robust feature histories and mechanical solid modeling.
- Assemblies, mates, and large design structures.
- Manufacturing drawings and formal engineering documentation.
- Standard mechanical-CAD exchange and production collaboration.
- Revision control, design tables, or product-data management.
CAD Sketcher’s own project description says it is not intended to replace CAD programs. The safest description is therefore “CAD-like constrained sketching inside Blender,” not “Blender is now equivalent to a full CAD package.”

Common problems and safer recovery
Installation problems
Unpacked archives, an unsupported Blender version, an outdated release, or changed packaging can prevent the extension from appearing. Confirm the minimum version, keep the archive compressed, reinstall from disk, and consult the project documentation or issue tracker if the problem persists.
Unexpected sketch movement
Conflicting constraints, an over-constrained sketch, an incorrect plane orientation, an accidental dimension edit, or experimental solver behavior can all produce surprising results. Undo the last change, remove redundant constraints, check the sketch state, and reproduce the issue in a minimal file before reporting it.
File safety
The project describes CAD Sketcher as experimental and warns users not to rely on it uncritically for production files. Keep versioned .blend files, test updates on copies, export important intermediate geometry, and maintain a clean backup before installing or updating the extension.

Verdict
CAD Sketcher is worth trying if you already work in Blender and need constrained sketches for simple parts, product concepts, printable prototypes, or visual assets. Its main advantage is continuity: one application can take a dimension-driven sketch into Blender’s modeling, materials, rendering, and procedural workflow.
It is not evidence that Blender has become a full mechanical-CAD system. For assemblies, formal engineering documentation, mature feature histories, or production manufacturing data, use a dedicated CAD application and bring the resulting geometry into Blender when visualization is needed.
