Procreate for iPad is a one-time App Store purchase, not a subscription. If you already bought it, check the App Store’s Purchased list using the Apple ID tied to the purchase; an eligible family member may also be able to access it through Family Sharing. Procreate Pocket is a separate iPhone app, not a free iPad version.
Is Procreate actually free?
No. Procreate’s official product page describes the iPad app as available exclusively through the App Store with no subscription. Check your local App Store listing for the current price and device information; prices and availability can vary by region.

Legitimate ways to use Procreate without paying again
1. Redownload a previous purchase
If you bought Procreate before, first check the App Store’s Purchased list under the Apple ID used for that purchase:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your account or profile icon.
- Open Purchased.
- Find Procreate and download it if it is listed.
If it is missing, check whether you are signed in with a different Apple ID or whether someone in your Family Sharing group made the original purchase. Procreate’s guidance on moving artwork to a new iPad also covers finding an app purchased by a family member.
2. Use Apple Family Sharing
Procreate says it supports Apple Family Sharing. A purchaser can share access with up to five other family members, provided purchase sharing is enabled and the family members are signed in with their own Apple IDs.

To troubleshoot missing access:
- Confirm that you are in the purchaser’s Family Sharing group.
- Ask the purchaser to confirm purchase sharing is enabled.
- Check the purchaser’s Purchased list for Procreate.
- Make sure each person is signed in with the Apple ID associated with the family group.

3. Check the local App Store listing before buying
If you have not purchased the app and cannot access it through Family Sharing, check your local App Store listing for the current price and compatibility information. Procreate’s product page describes the app as a one-time purchase, but does not publish a universal price.
What does “Restore Purchases” do?
Restore Purchases is not a way to unlock the app for free. Procreate’s Handbook 5.3 says the app currently has no in-app purchases, although older versions did. Its restore control applies to those past purchases attached to an account, not to getting the paid app itself without purchasing it.

Is Procreate Pocket the free iPad version?
No. Procreate Pocket is a separate app made for iPhone. It has its own App Store listing and is not a free iPad version of Procreate. Check the iPhone App Store listing for current regional pricing and details.

Can I use Procreate with Apple Pencil?
Apple Pencil is an optional accessory, not a way to get Procreate for free. Procreate describes the iPad experience as even better with Apple Pencil, but the cited product information does not say a Pencil is required. Check compatibility for your specific iPad and Pencil before buying an accessory.
Back up your artwork before changing devices
Getting access to the app again and preserving your artwork are separate issues. Procreate says iPad artwork is stored locally and may be lost if the app is deleted, storage is overwritten, or the iPad is lost. Export important work or back up the iPad before uninstalling the app, changing accounts, or moving to another device. Exporting in Procreate format retains layer information, settings, and time-lapse replay.

Does “Restore Purchases” give me Procreate for free?
