Pyramid Flow is a 2024 research project that released a video-generation method, code, and model checkpoints. Its authors describe a 768p checkpoint for videos up to 10 seconds at 24 frames per second, plus a 384p checkpoint for up to five seconds; these are project specifications, not guarantees of quality on every prompt or computer.
It may suit researchers and technically capable creators who want to experiment with local generation. Before trying it, distinguish the software license from the checkpoint license, and check the CUDA, GPU-memory, and storage requirements for the specific version you plan to use.
What launched, and when?
The paper was submitted to arXiv on October 8, 2024. The project says it released its technical report, project page, and model checkpoint on October 10, followed by a Hugging Face demo on October 11. On October 29, the model page recorded training code and new checkpoints using a miniFLUX structure. The project said the change from an SD3 structure was intended to address human-structure issues. The model page describes miniFLUX for 1024p images and 384p video, and SD3 variants for 768p and 384p video. Check the specific checkpoint rather than assuming all Pyramid Flow versions have the same capabilities.
How Pyramid Flow works
Pyramid Flow is an autoregressive video-generation method based on flow matching. Its paper describes spatial and temporal pyramids within one Diffusion Transformer, rather than a separate cascade of models for each resolution stage.
The method uses lower-resolution representations during earlier parts of the denoising process, when the authors argue full resolution is not necessary, and predicts later video latents using previously generated history. The paper says its temporal pyramid compresses that history to reduce token use and training computation while keeping a unified model.

For one stated ten-second, 241-frame setup, the paper reports no more than 15,360 tokens compared with 119,040 for full-sequence diffusion. This is a paper-reported comparison for that setup, not a universal efficiency ratio. The authors report 20.7k A100 GPU training hours for training a ten-second model; this is training compute, not the time needed to generate an individual clip.

These are stated generation options, not promises of convenient performance or consistent visual quality. The official project page shows selected demonstrations, including city scenes, landscapes, food, animals, and image animation; those examples are not a systematic test of prompt coverage or consistency.
How strong was the quality claim?
The paper’s abstract says the method supports “high-quality” five-second videos, and up to 10 seconds, at 768p and 24 frames per second. The authors evaluate on VBench and EvalCrafter and describe results as competitive among systems trained on public data.
The paper also reports a user study using 50 prompts and more than 20 participants, judging aesthetic quality, motion smoothness, and semantic alignment. The authors report preference over some open models, including Open-Sora and CogVideoX-2B, particularly for motion smoothness. These are author-reported research results with a defined comparison scope, not independent validation or proof of superiority across all prompts and uses.
The project’s examples and reported experiments should therefore be read as evidence about the authors’ tested configurations, not a guarantee that every generation will look polished. No independent hands-on test is available in the supplied research.

Is Pyramid Flow really open source?
“Open” does not mean every project component has one license. The repository’s software license is MIT, while the SD3 checkpoint page carries the stabilityai-ai-community label. These apply to distinct artifacts.

How to run Pyramid Flow locally
The official repository documents a CUDA-based inference workflow that loads the VAE, DiT, and text encoder and exports frames at 24 frames per second. Consult the repository’s current instructions and example code for the checkpoint and environment you intend to use; the supplied research does not establish one universally compatible installation recipe.
The README says CPU offloading can enable inference with less than 12 GB of GPU memory. Treat this as a project-reported possibility for supported configurations, not a guarantee that every lower-memory system will run quickly or support every resolution. The documented workflow uses CUDA, and the sources do not recommend a specific consumer GPU.

Common questions before trying it
Can Pyramid Flow really make 10-second 768p videos?
The project documents a 768p checkpoint for up to 10 seconds at 24 frames per second. That states a supported generation capability, not a guarantee of consistent quality for every prompt or setup.
Does Pyramid Flow work on a computer with less than 12 GB of GPU memory?
The repository says CPU offloading can enable inference below 12 GB of GPU memory. Actual feasibility and speed depend on the configuration; the statement is not a universal hardware guarantee.
Is the Pyramid Flow model MIT-licensed?
The repository software is MIT-licensed, but that does not mean every checkpoint is. The SD3 checkpoint page uses a separate stabilityai-ai-community label. Check the exact model page and license for the weights you plan to use.

No. The authors report benchmark and user-study results for specified comparisons. Those results do not establish superiority across all models, prompts, or use cases.

Who should use Pyramid Flow?
Pyramid Flow may be useful to researchers studying video-generation methods and developers or creators comfortable with CUDA-based local inference. Its publicly released code and checkpoints enable experimentation, subject to the terms for each artifact.
It may be a poor fit for someone seeking a guaranteed one-click workflow, predictable results across varied prompts, or a model whose commercial terms can be inferred from a single project-wide license. Check the relevant checkpoint, requirements, and evaluation evidence before committing it to a workflow.
Verdict
Pyramid Flow’s October 2024 release combined a research method, implementation, and checkpoints. The project documents video generation up to 10 seconds at 768p and 24 frames per second, and the paper reports competitive results among models trained on public data. Those capabilities and quality claims belong in their research context, not as universal performance promises.
