Short answer: Do not make ordinary laundry detergent your routine cleaner for painted walls. Paint-care guidance from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, and The Home Depot consistently starts with plain warm water, then a small amount of mild soap or mild dishwashing detergent if water alone does not work. None of those sources directly tests ordinary laundry detergent on all four sheens, so avoiding it is a cautious, finish-preserving recommendation rather than proof that every laundry formula will cause damage.

If laundry detergent is the only option, dilute it heavily, test it behind furniture, use a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge with very light pressure, rinse with clean water, and stop immediately if the color, sheen, or texture changes. Flat and eggshell paint need substantially gentler treatment than satin, gloss, or semi-gloss.
Why is laundry detergent a risky choice for painted walls?
Laundry products are designed to release body oils, food residue, and other soils from fabric, not to preserve a thin decorative film on a wall. A laundry formula may contain a blend of surfactants, builders, enzymes, fragrances, brighteners, or other additives. The exact ingredients and concentration vary by product, so “laundry detergent” is not one consistent chemical.
Painted walls have a limited tolerance for moisture, rubbing, and residue. Cleaning can soften a recently applied film, burnish a low-sheen surface, leave a visible film, or create uneven gloss. A cleaner that is harmless on a washable gloss trim may visibly mark a flat wall.

The cited manufacturer guidance does not publish a comparative test of ordinary laundry detergent across flat, eggshell, satin, and gloss paint. It repeatedly recommends water first and a mild soap or mild dishwashing detergent when more cleaning power is needed. That is why the safest practical answer is to avoid laundry detergent for routine wall washing, not because every formulation is proven destructive.
Which paint finish can tolerate the most cleaning?
In practical order, flat is the most delicate, followed by eggshell, satin, and then gloss or semi-gloss as the most washable. Higher sheen generally improves cleanability, but a glossy film can show scratches and fine abrasions more readily.
| Finish | Relative washability | Water tolerance | Rubbing and burnishing risk | Cleaner approach | Typical failure to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat | Lowest | Use the least water possible | Highest; rubbing can create shiny patches or remove pigment | Dry dusting, then plain warm water only when necessary; mild soap as a last escalation | Visible sheen change, streaks, or a worn-looking patch |
| Eggshell | Low to moderate | Damp tool, never wet or dripping | Still vulnerable to burnishing and pressure marks | Warm water first; a dilute mild cleaner with gentle passes | Uneven sheen or a polished-looking area |
| Satin | Moderate to high | More forgiving, but avoid soaking seams and edges | Lower than flat and eggshell, though scrubbing can still dull or scratch | Warm water, then a small amount of mild dish soap if needed | Fine scratches, streaks, or cleaner residue |
| Gloss or semi-gloss | Highest | Usually the most tolerant, provided water is controlled | Less likely to burnish, but the reflective film reveals scratches | Gentle cleaning is still preferred; do not assume gloss permits aggressive chemicals | Micro-scratches, haze, or visible swirl marks |
These differences explain why one answer cannot be applied to every wall. “Washable” means a finish can usually withstand careful maintenance; it does not mean it is immune to concentrated detergent, abrasives, prolonged wetting, or forceful scrubbing.

Can you use laundry detergent on flat paint?
Flat paint should be your strongest reason to avoid laundry detergent. Its low-sheen surface is more likely to absorb or show moisture, lose pigment under friction, and develop shiny burnished spots.
Use the least aggressive method
- Remove loose dust with a soft dry cloth, vacuum brush, or tack cloth.
- Try a barely damp microfiber cloth with plain warm water.
- Blot or make short, light passes instead of scrubbing.
- If a mark remains, use a very dilute mild soap solution rather than concentrated laundry product.
Keep the cleaning area small. If the mark does not lift after a few gentle passes, continuing to rub usually increases the chance of a visible patch. On flat paint, repainting a small section may produce a better result than escalating to a stronger chemical.
Will laundry detergent damage eggshell paint?
Eggshell paint is more washable than flat paint, but it remains a relatively low-sheen finish. A dilute cleaner may be tolerated after a patch test, yet concentrated detergent, excess water, or repeated rubbing can leave a polished spot or streak.
Use a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge, wring it nearly dry, and work in sections no larger than you can rinse and dry promptly. Do not let a detergent mixture sit on the wall. If the surface looks different while damp, wait until it is fully dry before judging it; if the change remains, stop cleaning that area.
Is laundry detergent safe for satin paint?
Satin generally handles routine cleaning better than flat or eggshell paint. Even so, laundry detergent is not the supported first-line cleaner. Start with warm water and move to a small amount of mild dish soap only if needed.

Can you wash gloss or semi-gloss paint with detergent?
Gloss and semi-gloss are usually the most washable wall finishes and can tolerate more careful cleaning than low sheens. Their reflective surface, however, makes scratches, haze, and residue easy to see. Do not treat gloss as permission to use a strong or undiluted laundry product.
Use a soft, non-abrasive tool and light pressure. Rinse with clean water after any soap solution, because a leftover film can change the way light reflects from the wall. Pay particular attention around trim, corners, and repaired areas, where a different paint film may respond differently.
What is the safest way to clean a painted wall?
The safest sequence is dust, warm water, a mild cleaner only if necessary, a clean-water rinse, and gentle drying. Follow these steps in order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Identify the finish and paint type. Determine whether the wall is flat, eggshell, satin, gloss, or semi-gloss. Water-based and oil-based paints can differ in moisture resistance, so check the paint label or project records when available.
- Confirm that the paint has cured. Sherwin-Williams guidance published for 2026 recommends waiting at least two weeks before routine washing of newly painted walls. Benjamin Moore’s 2026 guidance also treats two weeks as ideal; it allows an isolated early spill to be handled after four to six hours with the gentle method. That shorter interval is for a specific spill, not normal wall washing. Label instructions and local temperature, humidity, ventilation, and film thickness control the real cure time.
- Dust before adding water. Use a vacuum brush, tack cloth, or soft dry cloth. Loose grit can act like sandpaper when dragged across paint.
- Try plain warm water. Benjamin Moore identifies plain water as one of the best first cleaning agents. Dampen a microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge and wring it out so it is damp, not dripping.
- Escalate only when water fails. Mix a small amount of mild dish soap or another mild detergent into warm water. Avoid harsh, abrasive, ammoniated, or solvent-heavy cleaners on waterborne paint. Do not pour concentrated laundry detergent directly onto the wall or cloth.
- Patch-test the exact method. Test the cleaner, water amount, cloth, and pressure behind furniture or wall art. Let the test area dry completely, because sheen changes may not be obvious while wet.
- Clean a small section. Use light pressure and short overlapping passes. Keep the tool damp rather than wet, and never allow the solution to dry on the surface.
- Rinse with clean water. Use a separate clean, damp cloth to remove soap and loosened soil. Change the rinse water when it becomes cloudy.
- Dry immediately. Blot or wipe with a soft absorbent cloth. Do not leave runs, puddles, or a damp edge to dry on its own.
- Inspect after drying. Look for a change in color, sheen, texture, or adhesion. If any appears, stop and do not expand the test to the rest of the wall.
What should you do if you insist on trying laundry detergent?
Use it only as a controlled last resort, not as a standard wall-washing solution. Choose a plain liquid product rather than a pod or highly concentrated dose, because concentrated products are difficult to measure safely on a painted surface. Make the solution very dilute, use the smallest workable amount, and prepare fresh rinse water.
Patch-test behind furniture and wait for complete drying. Apply with a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge using minimal pressure. Keep the working area small, rinse thoroughly with clean water, and dry at once. Stop if the test area becomes tacky, streaked, lighter, darker, shinier, duller, or rougher.
Never mix laundry detergent with bleach, ammonia, acids, or other cleaners. Do not use a laundry pod directly on a wall, spray a concentrated product overhead, or leave detergent to dwell while you work elsewhere.

How do you fix common problems after cleaning paint?
The wall feels sticky or looks streaky
Sticky or streaky surfaces usually indicate residue or uneven drying. Wipe a small area with a clean cloth dampened with plain water, rinse the cloth frequently, and dry immediately. If the film remains after it dries, stop adding cleaner; repeated passes can enlarge the visible patch.

A flat or eggshell area looks shiny
A shiny patch is often burnishing from friction rather than dirt that needs more detergent. Do not scrub harder. Let the area dry fully, compare it in the same light, and plan a compatible touch-up or repaint if the change persists.
The gloss surface looks hazy or scratched
Fine abrasions or leftover cleaner can scatter reflected light. Rinse gently with clean water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges and powders, which can make the haze permanent.
The mark will not come off
Some stains have penetrated the paint or require a specialty treatment that may be more damaging than the mark. Stop after the patch-tested method fails. Record the paint color and sheen, then ask a paint professional whether spot priming and repainting is preferable to stronger household chemicals.
The paint is peeling, chalking, or soft
Do not wash aggressively. Loose or failing paint needs adhesion and surface repairs first; water and rubbing can remove more film. Allow the area to dry, remove only material that is already loose, and address the underlying paint failure before cleaning again.

Use a simple escalation rule: choose the least powerful method that solves the problem.
| Situation | Preferred method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dust, loose soil, or light fingerprints | Dry dusting, then warm water | Removes loose material with the lowest chemical and abrasion risk |
| Greasy or persistent spot on a cured wall | Warm water with a small amount of mild dish soap | Supported by paint-care guidance and easier to control than laundry formulations |
| Only laundry detergent is available | Very dilute, patch-tested solution followed by a complete rinse | A cautious fallback, not a manufacturer-endorsed routine |
| Flat paint that changes during testing | Stop; consider touch-up or repainting | More rubbing or stronger cleaner is likely to make the defect more visible |
The practical trade-off is cleaning power versus film preservation. More chemical strength and more pressure may remove a mark faster, but they also reduce your margin for error—especially on flat and eggshell finishes.

What do paint-care authorities actually say?
Sherwin-Williams’ cleaning guidance describes a mild mixture as tough on dirt while gentle on walls, and its maintenance FAQ emphasizes that regular cleaning contributes to the life of a painted surface. Its 2026 guidance pages recommend waiting at least two weeks before routine washing of newly painted walls.
Benjamin Moore states that plain water is one of the best first cleaning agents and that higher gloss or sheen is generally easier to clean. Its 2026 guidance treats two weeks as the ideal wait after painting, while allowing a four-to-six-hour response for an isolated spill when the gentle procedure is used.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The Home Depot notes that flat, eggshell, and satin finishes are less durable and more likely to rub off than higher-sheen finishes. Taken together, these statements support a finish-sensitive, low-abrasion method—not routine use of ordinary laundry detergent.
What is the bottom-line recommendation for each sheen?
- Flat: Avoid laundry detergent. Dust first, use minimal warm water, and stop rather than scrub.
- Eggshell: Treat as delicate. Use a damp soft tool, mild cleaner only after water fails, and very light pressure.
- Satin: Usually washable with careful technique. Prefer warm water or mild dish soap, and protect against scratches.
- Gloss or semi-gloss: Most washable, but still rinse and dry completely because residue and scratches show easily.
If you need a repeatable maintenance routine, plain warm water followed by a dilute mild dishwashing solution is the better-supported choice. Laundry detergent belongs, at most, in a heavily diluted, inconspicuous test—not in the regular cleaning bucket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a laundry pod on a painted wall?
No. A pod contains a concentrated, premeasured dose that cannot be sensibly diluted on the wall and may leave a heavy residue or react badly with a delicate film. Keep pods away from painted surfaces and use a controllable, mild cleaner instead.
Will a magic eraser remove marks without harming paint?
A melamine “magic eraser” works by very fine abrasion, so it can remove paint or create a shiny burnished patch, especially on flat and eggshell finishes. If you try one at all, test a hidden area first and use almost no pressure; a soft damp cloth is safer.
Can laundry detergent remove smoke or heavy kitchen grease from paint?
It may not remove deeply embedded smoke or grease without repeated wetting and scrubbing, which can damage the film. Clean a small test area first, improve ventilation, and consider professional surface preparation or repainting when the contamination is widespread.
Does the wall color affect whether detergent is safe?
Color alone does not determine washability; the paint’s resin, sheen, age, and application matter more. Very dark colors can make streaks and burnishing easier to see, so inspect a completely dry test patch under the room’s normal lighting.
