Canon EOS R5 Mark II review: 45MP speed puts Sony on notice

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II combines an approximately 45MP stacked sensor with up to 30fps electronic bursts and internal 8K video. It is a compelling hybrid camera, but compare its video workflow, reviewer-reported caveats and total system cost with the Sony A1 II and Nikon Z8.

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II pairs a 45MP full-frame stacked sensor with electronic bursts up to 30 frames per second, making it a strong hybrid option for sports, wildlife, events and video. It competes with the Sony A1 II and Nikon Z8, but does not universally beat them: the right choice depends on autofocus needs, video workflow, system cost and the lenses you already own.

Its speed-focused upgrades matter most when subjects move. Buyers should also account for suitable cards, lenses and batteries, and consider the optional cooling fan grip if they plan extended 8K recording. The camera has real caveats, including reviewer-reported banding in difficult light and fiddly noise reduction.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II: key specifications

Feature Canon EOS R5 Mark II

Processing DIGIC Accelerator and DIGIC X
Electronic burst Up to 30 frames per second
Mechanical or electronic-first-curtain burst Up to 12 frames per second

Optional cooling CF-R20EP fan grip; Canon Singapore says it enables more than 120 minutes of 8K 30p recording

Canon announced the EOS R5 Mark II on July 17, 2024. Canon U.S.A.’s launch estimate was $4,299 for the body; that is a historical launch price, not a current-price guarantee. Check local dealer pricing and availability before buying.

What makes the R5 Mark II different?

The R5 Mark II’s central proposition is combining high resolution with fast readout. Its stacked sensor and DIGIC Accelerator plus DIGIC X processing support up to 30fps electronic shooting, while deep-learning-based subject recognition and autofocus are intended to help keep up with moving subjects. Canon says the faster readout reduces rolling-shutter distortion compared with the previous R5 generation.

That makes the camera particularly relevant to photographers who need both detailed files and action capability. The headline burst rate does not guarantee the same keeper rate in every situation: results depend on the subject, lens, settings and shooting conditions.

Image quality: detailed files with a speed-first trade-off

The approximately 45MP sensor provides detailed still images and room to crop. Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide praises the still-image quality and versatility, while also reporting banding in difficult lighting and fiddly noise reduction as drawbacks. These are reviewer assessments, not quantified lab results from the research available here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The camera’s in-camera upscaling is limited to JPEG and HEIF, according to Digital Camera World. Treat enlarged files as a processing option rather than native 180MP capture. A photographer mostly shooting stationary subjects may not benefit as much from the speed-focused changes; TechRadar notes that the original R5 may suit some landscape photographers better.

30fps shooting and rolling shutter

Canon specifies electronic bursts up to 30 frames per second and mechanical or electronic-first-curtain bursts up to 12 frames per second. The fast readout and blackout-free electronic shooting make the R5 Mark II appealing for wildlife and sports, but burst rate alone does not determine autofocus performance or the proportion of sharp frames.

Action Priority and subject recognition are designed to help with fast-moving subjects. Try the camera with the sport, wildlife or event situations you actually shoot where possible, and consider lens choice and tracking behavior alongside the headline frame rate.

Autofocus and subject recognition

The R5 Mark II combines deep-learning-based subject recognition and autofocus with Eye Control AF and Action Priority. Those features make it a capable candidate for sports, wildlife and events, but their value depends on the subject and the photographer’s workflow. Do not assume that a feature name or burst specification guarantees results in every setting.

Firmware matters

Canon Philippines lists Firmware Version 1.3.2, dated August 24, 2026. Canon says it improves a live-view delay with EOS Multi Remote, fixes linked-shooting capture failure in a specified FTP-connected workflow and a possible restart with Dual Pixel RAW enabled, and improves operational stability. Firmware versions can vary by region, so check the relevant Canon support page for your market and the installed version on a used camera.

Canon’s update history also lists additions in version 1.3.0 to Action Priority and person tracking. Check the release notes for your region before relying on a particular feature or fix.

Eye Control AF: useful differentiator or gimmick?

Eye Control AF is a distinctive feature, but it should not be the main reason to buy the camera without trying it. Its usefulness depends on the photographer and shooting situation. Compare it with the camera’s conventional AF-area and subject-recognition options during a hands-on test.

Video: capable, with a cooling-workflow consideration

Canon lists internal 8K 60p RAW and 4K 120p recording, along with Canon Log 2 and Log 3. Those formats give hybrid creators substantial options, but resolution and frame rate affect storage, workflow and recording duration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For extended 8K recording, Canon Singapore says the separately sold CF-R20EP cooling fan grip enables more than 120 minutes of 8K 30p recording. That figure applies to the stated mode and accessory; it is not a guarantee of unlimited recording or a runtime claim for other modes and conditions. Consider whether the added accessory fits your budget and production setup.

The R5 Mark II can suit creators who need high-resolution stills and advanced video from one body. If long takes, sustained recording and a video-first physical workflow dominate your work, compare it with bodies designed around those priorities.

Cards, battery, and the real ownership cost

The camera has one SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-II slot and one CFexpress Type B slot. High-bitrate video and fast bursts make card selection part of the workflow; check Canon’s media requirements for the recording mode you plan to use. Do not assume that a card’s advertised peak speed guarantees suitable sustained performance.

Canon lists the LP-E6P as a 2130mAh battery with a maximum continuous discharge current of 6A. Buyers should factor suitable media, spare batteries, storage and lenses into the total system cost rather than comparing body prices alone. Optional accessories such as the CF-R20EP cooling fan grip are relevant for specific workflows, not essential for every owner.

Lens compatibility and system choice

The EOS R5 Mark II is a system purchase as well as a camera body. Compare the lenses and accessories you already own with the cost of building the kit you need. For photographers changing systems, include media, batteries and workflow changes in the comparison, not just the body.

Sony A1 II

The title’s “puts Sony on notice” framing is competitive, not proof that Canon wins every category. TechRadar describes the Sony A1 II as offering a modest performance and resolution boost at around 40% more. Those are that guide’s editorial comparison and price characterization, not results from a same-condition test presented here. The better choice depends on your shooting needs, system investment and workflow.

Nikon Z8

TechRadar calls the Nikon Z8 a close rival. Compare the cameras by the work you need them to do: resolution and readout, burst shooting and autofocus, video formats and recording workflow, lens options, and total cost.

Canon EOS R1

The R5 Mark II is aimed at photographers who want high resolution alongside action and video capability. Choose between Canon bodies according to the needs of your assignment and the camera’s intended role; do not treat one specification as a universal winner.

Video-first alternatives

If extended recording is central to your work, compare recording duration, cooling, media and production ergonomics. The R5 Mark II’s optional cooling grip is relevant for extended 8K 30p recording, but it does not make every format or condition unlimited.

Who should buy the Canon EOS R5 Mark II?

  • Wildlife and sports photographers: The combination of approximately 45MP resolution, up to 30fps electronic shooting and subject-recognition features is designed for detail and action.
  • Hybrid professionals: It combines high-resolution stills with internal 8K and high-frame-rate 4K video.
  • Canon users: Existing lenses and accessories may make the system more practical than switching brands; compare compatibility and total costs.
  • Photographers who crop: The 45MP files offer room to reframe, though the value depends on your output needs and storage workflow.

Who should choose something else?

  • Photographers mostly shooting stationary subjects: The speed-focused upgrades may matter less; TechRadar says the original R5 may be a better fit for some landscape photographers.
  • Budget-conscious buyers: Include lenses, suitable cards, batteries and any workflow-specific accessories in the total cost.
  • Video-first productions: Compare sustained recording needs and cooling workflow carefully, including the mode-specific limits of any accessory runtime claim.
  • Anyone choosing solely by headline specifications: Compare real autofocus needs, recording workflow and system investment rather than assuming a higher number means a better camera for every use.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II review verdict

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II makes a strong case for photographers who need high resolution and action capability in one body. Canon specifies an approximately 45MP stacked sensor, up to 30fps electronic bursts, internal 8K 60p RAW and 4K 120p. Its subject-recognition features and fast readout make it relevant to wildlife, sports, events and hybrid production.

It is not a universal winner over Sony or Nikon. TechRadar presents the Sony A1 II as a more expensive alternative with a modest performance and resolution boost, and calls the Nikon Z8 a close rival. Digital Camera World’s 2026 assessment praises the R5 Mark II’s stills, speed and autofocus while flagging banding in difficult light, JPEG/HEIF-only in-camera upscaling and fiddly noise reduction.

For Canon users seeking a versatile high-resolution camera with action and video capability, the R5 Mark II is compelling. Buyers should weigh the camera against their actual subjects, recording needs, existing lenses and full system cost—not the burst rate alone.
