To make your first Midjourney image, subscribe, open the Create page at midjourney.com, type a description into the Imagine bar, and submit it. Midjourney generates four image options; choose the closest one, then refine it with a variation, a prompt adjustment, or the Editor.
Start with a short prompt and a few details that matter. The current Midjourney Version documentation identifies V8.2 as the default, effective July 24, 2026; version features can change, so check the official documentation when a specific control matters.

How to make your first Midjourney image
- Subscribe to Midjourney, as required by its Getting Started Guide.
- Visit midjourney.com and open the Create page.
- Enter a description in the Imagine bar and submit it.
- Review the four generated options and select the one closest to your idea.
- Make a variation, reuse the prompt, or change one detail to explore a different result.
The Create page provides generation controls and shortcuts for actions such as variations, rerunning a prompt, reusing prompt text, and opening editing tools. Available controls may depend on your plan and current settings.
Write a prompt you can improve
Midjourney’s official Prompt Basics documentation says, “Short and simple prompts typically generate the best images with Midjourney.” Begin with the subject, then add only a few visual details that shape the result, such as the medium, setting, lighting, color, mood, or composition.
For example: a red fox in a snowy forest, soft morning light, muted blue and white palette.

You do not need to include every prompt element every time. Generate a first result, then change one detail at a time so you can see how your wording or settings affect the image. This is a useful way to learn, not a guarantee of a particular result.

Follow the documented syntax and version compatibility for the parameter you choose.
Refine a result with a simple iteration loop
- Generate an image from a concise prompt.
- Choose the option that is closest to your goal.
- Make a variation or reuse its prompt.
- Adjust one prompt detail or setting, then compare the result.
- Save or organize work you may want to revisit.
If the image is broadly right but one area needs a precise change, use the Editor rather than rewriting the entire prompt. Midjourney’s Editor supports workflows including Remix, inpainting (Vary Region), Pan, and Zoom Out, and can work with Midjourney images and your own images.

Use image guidance when words are not enough
An Image Prompt lets you add an image with text, combine multiple images, or use images as guidance. Midjourney says these references can influence content, composition, and colors, but they are inspiration for a new creation—not instructions to reproduce the source exactly.

The --iw parameter controls image influence in supported workflows. Its documented range varies by model, so check the official Image Prompts documentation for the version you are using before relying on a particular value.

Personalization adapts generation to aesthetic preferences based on images you select. You can enable a profile on the website or select one in a prompt. It is optional: learn how your plain prompt behaves first, then compare results with Personalization enabled.

Profile compatibility depends on the model version. Midjourney’s documentation says the Global V7 profile is compatible with V8.1 and V8.2, while V8 personalization profiles are not compatible with V7. Check the current Personalization documentation before changing versions or creating a profile.

Midjourney’s Version documentation identifies V8.2 as the default as of July 24, 2026. The same documentation describes changes focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization. Version details are time-sensitive; verify them in the official Version article before relying on them later.
The documentation also says the V8.2 Edit Model replaces Omni Reference, Character Reference, and Retexture. Do not assume a feature or workflow from an older version behaves the same way in the current model.
