Canon’s RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL is a dual-optics stereoscopic lens for compatible EOS cameras. It captures a relatively narrow, approximately 60-degree forward view for spatial video, spatial photos and other 3D formats—not the broad 180-degree scene many people expect from a VR lens. Canon announced it on October 30, 2024, at a U.S. estimated retail price of $449.99; Canon’s U.S. shop page said it was no longer available directly when checked on August 18, 2026.
What Canon launched
The RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL is an RF-mount, APS-C-oriented lens with two coordinated optical systems. Canon first previewed its development on June 10, 2024, including during Apple’s spatial-video push, then announced the finished lens on October 30, 2024. Canon positioned it for creators, enthusiasts and videographers exploring stereoscopic and spatial content. It belongs to Canon’s EOS VR System, a camera-and-software workflow rather than a standalone 3D camera. Canon’s development announcement and launch announcement describe the product and intended use.
The launch price was a historical U.S. estimated retail price, not a current price guarantee. Canon’s U.S. product listing reported the lens as “no longer available” directly from Canon when checked August 18, 2026. Reseller stock and pricing may differ and require current verification.

How the two-lens system creates 3D
The two optical paths sit 11.8mm apart, capturing slightly different left- and right-eye views. Both are recorded onto one camera sensor, so the workflow avoids coordinating two separate camera bodies and aligning their footage afterward. Canon’s software uses the capture and lens information to convert the material into viewable formats. This simplifies capture setup; it does not make the camera file automatically headset-ready.
Canon says the two lenses focus together, with a control to adjust the left/right focus difference. That matters because stereoscopic images rely on two views that work together. Very close subjects, prominent foreground objects or mismatched focus can create challenging parallax or alignment in the finished 3D image. The adjustment is a tool, not a guarantee that every scene will be comfortable to view.

Spatial video is not the same as VR180 capture
Canon describes the RF-S7.8mm’s image as approximately 60 degrees; the detailed specification lists a 63-degree diagonal angle of view. That is a focused, forward-facing composition. It can be converted for presentation in a 3D 180-degree viewing environment, but choosing a 180-degree output or playback format does not change the lens’s capture angle into a literal 180-degree scene.
Spatial video is stereoscopic video intended for compatible spatial-computing playback. Canon’s workflow also supports other outputs, including spatial photos, 3D Theater and 3D 180-degree-formatted material. These are different ways to package or present captured imagery, not evidence that the lens records a broad VR180 field.

- Ultra-wide-angle zoom lens opens the door to creative wide-angle video and still imagery for Canon EOS APS-C camera users.
- Focal range of 10-18mm (16-29mm equivalent) is great for shooting in tight spaces so the subject and background can be captured in a single frame.
- Wide angle of view works beautifully for vlogging and selfies without the need of a long selfie stick.
- Completely new optical design, optimized for mirrorless — outstanding image quality throughout the image, from center to periphery
- Maximum magnification of 0.23x in AF mode and 0.5x in MF mode for impressive close-up video and still images of small objects.
For a wider immersive view, Canon describes the RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE as producing a 144-degree stereoscopic 3D 180-degree VR image. The RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE is Canon’s higher-end full-frame and Cinema EOS option, with up-to-8K capability in supported configurations. The EOS VR System overview sets out these different roles.
Camera, software and playback requirements
Check the camera and firmware
At the lens’s 2024 launch, Canon identified the EOS R7 as the compatible camera. The lens product page specifies EOS R7 firmware 1.5.0 or later. Canon’s later EOS VR information lists the EOS R50 V, while Canon’s June 2025 announcement said EOS R50 compatibility would come through a firmware update. Because support varies by body, lens and feature, verify the exact camera, firmware and intended output against Canon’s current compatibility information before buying; an RF mount alone does not establish compatibility.

Convert the capture on a computer
- Mount and configure: Attach the lens to a supported camera and confirm its required firmware.
- Record: Capture stills or video with both optical paths using the camera’s supported recording modes.
- Transfer: Copy the material to a compatible computer with enough storage for the source files and exports.
- Process: Use EOS VR Utility or the EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro to convert and prepare the capture.
- Choose an output: Select the intended option, such as spatial video, spatial photo, 3D Theater or a 3D/VR format supported by the workflow.
- Export and view: Transfer the result to a compatible playback environment. Canon references Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3, but file-format and device support matter.
Canon describes EOS VR Utility and its Premiere Pro plug-in as subscription-based solutions. Canon’s June 2025 announcement notes that Apple spatial video, spatial photos and APMP-related support applies to the macOS version of EOS VR Utility, and that some features may require a fee. No current subscription amount is established here. The workflow therefore involves more than the lens: a supported camera, computer, conversion software, storage and suitable playback support can all matter. Canon’s June 2025 update covers the spatial-photo and compatibility expansion.

Where the lens fits—and where it does not
A sensible option for an existing compatible Canon user
For someone who already owns a supported body, the single-camera design offers a relatively uncomplicated way to try stereoscopic storytelling without building a synchronized two-camera rig. The narrow view can suit portraits, family memories, travel details and other scenes where the intended subject fits comfortably in front of the camera. The close-focus specification may also be useful for details, although stereoscopic depth needs careful composition at short distances.
Not a substitute for a VR180 fisheye
If the goal is to let a viewer look around a broad scene—such as a room, performance or landscape—the roughly 60-degree capture is the central limitation. The RF-S3.9mm is the more relevant Canon comparison for wide stereoscopic VR180, while the RF5.2mm is aimed at a higher-end production setup. Neither a 3D 180-degree export option nor headset playback expands the RF-S7.8mm’s original field of view.
Think in terms of the whole system
The lens is a poor match for someone without a supported Canon camera, someone expecting a self-contained camera-to-headset workflow, or a production team that needs broad compatibility with full-frame or cinema bodies. It is also a questionable choice for work requiring weather-sealed equipment. A prospective buyer should account for the computer conversion step, subscription-based software, storage and playback route alongside the lens; a headset is needed for immersive viewing, but not every creator must buy one just to capture or edit material.
Verdict
The RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL is best understood as an entry point to narrow-field stereoscopic storytelling within Canon’s EOS VR ecosystem. Its appeal is the manageable one-camera capture setup and support for spatial and other 3D outputs; its defining limitation is that it does not record a wide VR180 scene. It makes most sense for a creator who already has a compatible Canon body, wants that forward-facing perspective and is comfortable with Canon’s computer-based conversion workflow.
