This title describes a festive illustration combining a cartoon approach, a peony, a lantern and ink-wash styling; it does not identify a particular artist or image. Chinese New Year 2025 began on January 29, the date The Metropolitan Museum of Art gives for the start of the Year of the Snake. Without the artwork itself, its exact composition, colors, inscriptions and intended symbolism cannot be established.
What the title tells us—and what it does not
“Cartoon,” “peony,” “lantern” and “ink-wash” are the title’s stated visual cues. Together they suggest a design that might pair simplified, expressive forms with the soft edges or tonal variation associated with ink wash. That is a possible reading of the description, not a report about a verified image or its materials.
The title does not establish where the peony or lantern appears, which colors are used, whether the work includes Chinese characters, or whether it was made with ink on paper rather than another medium or a digital technique. Nor does it establish a definitive meaning for either motif in this particular work. Symbolic interpretations depend on the artwork and its context; the available institutional sources do not assign a fixed meaning to these elements here.

Chinese New Year and the 2025 zodiac context
The Met dates the beginning of the Year of the Snake to January 29, 2025, and describes the Chinese zodiac as a repeating cycle of twelve animals. Its exhibition framing associates the snake with being alert, calm and smart. Those are the museum’s stated character associations, not universal traits of every person born in that year or meanings that can automatically be applied to an artwork.
The National Museum of China provides a separate example of the range of material presented around the holiday: its 2025 Spring Festival exhibition opened January 22 and selected more than 200 objects in three sections. The museum described the exhibition as offering wishes of happiness and auspiciousness and noted that it followed Spring Festival’s inscription on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list. This institutional context does not establish a single interpretation for a peony or lantern in an unidentified illustration.

How to read or develop the visual idea
If using the title as a brief for a new illustration, treat these as design choices rather than claims about an existing image. A cartoon treatment can make a flower or lantern immediately recognizable through simplified contours; ink-wash effects can add tonal softness or texture. The two approaches can coexist, but the balance depends on the intended viewing size and the maker’s choices.
- Check legibility: At small display sizes, keep the principal shapes distinct enough to read as a peony and lantern.
- Balance contours and texture: Decide whether crisp cartoon outlines or diffuse wash marks should dominate, so neither obscures the other.
- Choose contrast and palette deliberately: The title specifies no colors, so any palette is an artistic decision rather than a documented feature.
- Be precise with cultural details: If adding written characters, have them checked by a fluent reader; the title does not state that the work includes text.
- Avoid assuming one audience-wide meaning: A festive motif can be interpreted in different ways, and no source here fixes the meaning of these particular elements.
Related 2025 cultural projects
Other institutions documented distinct Snake-year projects, but neither identifies the titled illustration. The Palace Museum published a 2025 calendar featuring zodiac-related museum objects. Its page lists ISBN 978-7-5134-1664-1, Palace Publishing House and a September 2024 first edition; the museum also reported near 6 million copies in cumulative circulation for its calendar series, a historical series-wide figure rather than sales of that edition. The calendar is a related cultural collectible, not evidence that it contains this artwork.
