A censor bar is a solid rectangular graphic placed over part of a word, image, or video to hide that area from view. It can signal privacy redaction, or serve as a visual joke or satirical mark. It is one graphic treatment—not a synonym for censorship in every form.
What is a censor bar?
A censor bar is an opaque, usually monochrome rectangle covering a selected area of text or an image. It appears in writing, photography, and video. Because the covered area is replaced visually by a solid block, the viewer sees the bar rather than the content beneath it. Why are censor bars used?
A censor bar can communicate that information is being withheld, such as when an editor wants to conceal a detail for privacy. It can also be used playfully or satirically: the conspicuous rectangle itself becomes a visual signal that something has been censored. A bar in an image does not, by itself, show who chose to cover the material or why.
Is a censor bar the same as censorship?
No. A censor bar is a visible graphic. Censorship is the broader suppression or exclusion of communication, subjects, or material, and it can happen without a rectangle appearing on screen or page. In broadcasting, standards and rating systems can shape what is shown; online, censorship can involve technical controls. These are different contexts from the graphic device itself. The term censorship also has contested meanings rather than one universally agreed definition, as PBS explains.

How does a censor bar differ from blur or pixelation?
All three treatments change what the viewer can see, but they look different. A censor bar covers the selected region with a solid block; blur softens the image, while pixelation breaks it into visible blocks. Blur and pixelation leave a transformed version of the image visible, whereas a bar presents a flat shape over it. They can be chosen for privacy, style, or comic effect. The available definitions do not establish which treatment is more secure, so appearance alone should not be treated as proof that underlying information has been removed.

Not necessarily. A bar can hide content from view in the rendered image, but the definition of a censor bar does not establish that covering text or an image in an editable file permanently removes the material underneath. For sensitive information, use a redaction method designed for the specific file format and verify the exported result; do not assume a visible overlay is equivalent to removing the underlying content.
