Friction is an open-source 2D animation and motion-graphics application for creating vector and raster animations for web and video. It is designed to animate artwork—not to replace a full drawing or painting program—so a practical workflow is to prepare assets in a separate graphics app, then animate them in Friction. It exports rendered video and image sequences as well as animated SVG, but SVG export supports only a subset of the application’s features, and Friction does not support Lottie.
What is Friction?
Friction is motion-graphics software for building 2D animations. Its feature set includes multiple scenes and timelines, viewers and graph editing, an ECMAScript expression editor for parameters, and text and path effects. The distinction between animation and artwork creation is important for painters and illustrators: Friction’s guide says it is not vector or raster drawing software. You can create some basic vector shapes and curves in the application, but for more involved illustration or painting, prepare artwork elsewhere and bring it into an animation project.
How does artwork get into a Friction project?
Friction’s guide describes two asset workflows, and the right one depends on whether you want the artwork editable inside the project or maintained in a separate file. The usage guide names Inkscape and Affinity Designer as vector-design examples, and Krita, GIMP, and Affinity Photo as bitmap-work examples; these are suggested workflow examples, not a comparative ranking.

For linked assets, keep the referenced source files available alongside the project; otherwise, the project may not be able to use them as expected. A drawing tablet may be useful for creating artwork in an external graphics application, but Friction’s documentation does not require one or specify a particular model.
What can you export from Friction?
The main choice is between animated SVG for web-oriented delivery, rendered media for playback or editing elsewhere, and still-image sequences. Each route has its own compatibility considerations. The export guide lists the supported formats and settings.

Animated SVG for web
Friction exports animated SVG using SMIL. SVG is not a full-fidelity copy of everything visible in the project viewer: the exporter supports only a subset of Friction features, so output can differ from the preview. The export guide lists categories including transforms, gradients, images, text, keyframes, expressions, path and transform effects, blur, shadow, shape morphing, masking, and blend modes. Check its current compatibility details for the specific features and settings your animation uses.
Friction’s FAQ says it does not support Lottie and has no current plan to add support, because the project uses SVG animation with SMIL instead. If a website, app, or delivery pipeline specifically requires Lottie, do not assume a Friction SVG can be used as-is; confirm that another tool or a conversion workflow meets the requirement. Rendered video, audio, and image sequences
The export documentation lists MP4/H.264, ProRes/MOV, MPEG-4, AVI, and WebM video formats, along with numerous audio formats, through integrated FFmpeg. It also lists TIFF, PNG, and JPEG image sequences. These are formats documented by the project, not independently tested results. The guide notes a ProRes-with-alpha compatibility issue with Apple Silicon decoders, which matters if your workflow depends on transparency in that combination.
GIF is not listed as a direct export format in the guide. Its suggested route is to export an MP4 or PNG sequence and convert it with GIFTuna or Gifski.

Which operating systems does Friction support?
The FAQ lists Linux and Windows for x86_64 systems, and macOS for both x86_64 and ARM64. It marks macOS support as beta and cautions that users should expect more issues there than on Linux or Windows. Check the download section for current packages and requirements; the reviewed official materials do not establish minimum operating-system versions or hardware requirements.
Is Friction open source, and can it be used commercially?
Yes. Friction’s FAQ says the application is open source under GPL version 3 and may be used for commercial projects. The official repository specifies GPL-3.0-only. If you distribute modified copies, consult the license text to understand the obligations that apply to your distribution; commercial use of the software and redistribution of modified software are distinct questions.

Who is Friction a good fit for?
Friction is a plausible fit if you want to animate prepared 2D artwork and your delivery target matches its export options. It may be less suitable when a required workflow depends on a full painting environment, guaranteed fidelity for every SVG feature, or Lottie output.
- Consider it if you want a motion-graphics tool with vector and raster asset workflows, multiple scenes and timelines, expressions, and rendered-media or image-sequence export.
- Plan to use another application too if your work involves substantial painting or detailed vector illustration; Friction’s guide recommends preparing assets externally.
- Check a sample export early if animated SVG is essential, especially if the project uses effects whose exported behavior matters.
- Look for another route or tool if Lottie is a hard delivery requirement, or if macOS beta status is unacceptable for your production needs.
The project describes stable branches and a versioning scheme in its repository, but the reviewed official sources do not establish a current stable version and release date. A Friction 0.9.1 release note from 4 July 2023 described that specific release as beta quality and warned of missing or broken features; it is historical context, not a statement about the present release.
