A chalice is a cup used to hold wine for Christian Holy Communion. In Roman Catholic Mass, it is a sacred vessel associated with the offering and consecration of the Eucharistic bread and wine. Churches may use different terms and follow different rules for the vessel, so requirements depend on the tradition.
What is a chalice used for?
A chalice holds communion wine. The United Methodist Church also uses “Cup” as a name for the chalice. In Roman Catholic worship, the chalice is one of the sacred vessels used with the paten, the plate for the bread. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal describes the chalice and paten as vessels “in which the bread and wine are offered and consecrated, and from which they are consumed.” Vatican, General Instruction of the Roman Missal; United Methodist Church, “Glossary: chalice”.

There is no single material rule that can be applied to every Christian church. The United Methodist glossary says chalices are often silver but may be made from any appropriate material; it does not set out a detailed purchasing standard. Roman Catholic guidance is more specific, and applies to the celebration of Mass.

Roman Catholic guidance
- The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says sacred vessels should be made of precious metal.
- Vessels made from metal that rusts or is less precious than gold should ordinarily be gilded on the inside.
- For chalices and other vessels holding consecrated wine, the bowl should be made of nonabsorbent material.
- In US dioceses, the document allows certain other solid materials regarded as precious locally, including ebony or other hard woods, if they are suitable for sacred use and unlikely to break or deteriorate.
- Artists may adapt a vessel’s form to regional customs, provided it is fit for liturgical use and clearly distinct from vessels intended for everyday use.
These are Roman Catholic provisions, including a specific allowance limited to US dioceses; they should not be treated as universal Christian requirements. General Instruction of the Roman Missal.
How have chalices varied through history?
Chalices have not had one fixed appearance. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that medieval liturgical practice was codified over several centuries and varied by locality, while chalices and patens remained essential Eucharistic vessels in Eastern and Western churches. Historical examples also differ in material and workmanship; surviving vessels include costly, durable materials such as silver, gold, and hardstone. A documented Catalan example
The Met’s collection includes a Catalan chalice dated circa 1400, made of silver, gilded silver, and basse-taille enamel. The museum describes its slender proportions and small bowl as typical of late 14th- and early 15th-century work, and notes a Barcelona hallmark on its base. It is one regional and period-specific object, not a model for all chalices. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Chalice — Catalan”.
What to check when choosing a chalice for worship
Confirm the requirements of the church or denomination that will use it before selecting a vessel. Then check that its material and construction suit the intended use. Depending on the setting, handling, durability, capacity, workmanship, and decoration may also matter. The historical record demonstrates variety, but the cited sources do not establish a standardized modern rating system or comparative product test.
