Female mosquitoes bite people and animals to get a blood meal; most need that blood to produce eggs. Their saliva triggers the skin reaction that causes an itchy bump. To reduce bites, combine an EPA-registered repellent used as directed with covering clothing, barriers such as screens or netting, and removal of standing water.
Why do mosquitoes bite?
Female mosquitoes take blood meals, and most need blood to produce eggs. Males do not bite people or animals. Mosquitoes are diverse—CDC reported more than 3,700 types worldwide in 2024—but that figure is not a count of species that bite people or transmit disease. CDC: About Mosquitoes
Why do mosquito bites itch?
As a mosquito feeds, it introduces saliva into the skin. The body’s response to that saliva causes the familiar itching and swelling. A puffy reddish bump may appear within minutes; a harder itchy bump, several bumps, or small blisters may develop later. Reactions vary: some people have mild symptoms, while others develop more swelling, soreness, or redness. CDC: About Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes can bite during the day and at night, so use protection when and where mosquitoes are present. CDC and EPA guidance supports layering personal protection with barriers and reducing standing water. CDC: Preventing Mosquito Bites

Choose and apply a repellent
Use a product registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and follow its label, including directions for reapplication. CDC lists DEET, picaridin (also called KBR 3023 or icaridin outside the United States), IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), and 2-undecanone. Check the product’s EPA registration number and use the EPA search tool to find registered repellents. Registration means the company provided EPA with technical information about product effectiveness; it does not establish a universal best brand.
CDC says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some marketed as natural, is unknown. Pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil is not interchangeable with registered OLE or PMD products: CDC’s Yellow Book says it is not recommended as a repellent because it lacks validated safety and efficacy testing and EPA repellent registration. If using sunscreen and repellent together, apply sunscreen first and repellent second. Do not put repellent on skin under clothing.
Cover skin and protect clothing and gear
- Wear loose-fitting long sleeves and pants.
- Permethrin-treated clothing and gear can provide protection after multiple washings. Do not apply permethrin products directly to skin.
- Use mosquito netting over beds, strollers, or baby carriers when appropriate.
Protect children
- Cover children’s arms and legs and use netting over strollers and baby carriers.
- Do not use products containing OLE or PMD on children under 3.
- Do not apply repellent to a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin.
- For a child’s face, an adult should first apply repellent to their own hands, then apply it to the child’s face.
- Follow the product label for the child’s age and application instructions.
Reduce mosquitoes around the home
- Use window and door screens, and repair holes in them. Use air conditioning if available.
- At least weekly, empty and scrub, cover, turn over, or discard items that hold water.
- Maintain structural barriers and use netting for beds or baby carriers where applicable.
These steps address different exposure routes: repellent protects exposed skin, treated clothing and gear provide a wearable barrier, screens and netting help keep mosquitoes out of enclosed spaces, and managing standing water reduces places where mosquitoes can develop. What to do after a mosquito bite
- Wash the bite and surrounding skin with soap and water.
- Apply an ice pack for 10 minutes to help reduce swelling and itching; repeat as needed.
- For symptom relief, use an over-the-counter anti-itch or antihistamine cream according to its label. CDC also lists a paste made from baking soda and water.
These measures address local symptoms; they are not prevention or treatment for mosquito-borne disease. Local disease activity and travel-related risk vary by place and date, so follow current local public-health guidance when relevant.
