Fai chun are festive Chinese New Year couplets, usually written or printed on red paper and displayed around a doorway. Their paired lines express wishes for the year ahead; they are both a literary tradition and a calligraphic decoration. Government sources also use the broader term 春联 (chūnlián), translated as “Spring Festival couplets” or “New Year scrolls.”

What is fai chun?
A common fai chun set has two vertical scrolls and a shorter horizontal inscription above them. The two vertical lines are written to work together: they match in character count, balance in structure and meaning, and harmonize in tone. Five- and seven-character lines are common. Rather than serving only as decoration, the verses convey hopes and auspicious wishes for the coming year.

The Hubei Provincial Government’s Foreign Affairs Office describes 春联 as “a kind of rhyming couplet pasted on both sides of the doors or pillars of a home during Spring Festival.” The exact arrangement and wording can vary, but the paired structure is central to the convention.

How are fai chun written and displayed?
Paper, ink and calligraphy
Red paper with black or gold characters is typical. The brushwork is part of the visual appeal: the written characters make the couplets a form of festive calligraphic art as well as a message. Printed scrolls are also used. The paired lines should be read together, so their wording and visual balance matter as much as the color of the paper.
Placement
The two vertical scrolls are commonly placed on either side of a door or on pillars, with the horizontal inscription above. If creating or choosing a set, check that the vertical lines form a matched pair and that the top inscription belongs with them.

Color depends on context
Red is the common festive color, not a rule for every setting. The Hubei reference documents yellow couplet paper in temples and different colors for mourning households: white in the first year, green in the second, yellow in the third, and red again in the fourth. These are context-specific customs, not alternatives to apply indiscriminately to a celebratory doorway.

What does the 福 character mean?
The character 福 (fú) expresses blessings or good fortune and is often displayed alongside Spring Festival couplets. Shanghai’s municipal explainer describes a familiar wordplay: when 福 is hung upside down, dào (“upside-down”) sounds like 到, dào (“arrive”), suggesting “good fortune arrives.” The character is a related New Year decoration, rather than one of the couplet’s paired lines.

Where did the tradition come from?
Accounts of the custom trace it to peachwood charms. The Taiwan Provincial Consultative Council’s cultural heritage explainer describes peachwood boards used to ward off harmful spirits and the development from names or auspicious words on boards to paper couplets. Red’s association with auspiciousness is also linked in that account to the historical belief that it repelled spirits.
Travel China’s official tourism article reports that early spring couplets appeared in the Later Shu period (934–965 CE), that posting them became popular in the Song dynasty (960–1279), and that writing them on red paper became common by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). This is a source-attributed chronology, not a single universally established origin date. Stories about the Nian monster belong to traditional legend, not verified historical evidence.

Choosing or making a set
- For a conventional festive display: choose a red-paper pair with black or gold writing and a matching horizontal inscription.
- For a handmade set: use calligraphy paper and brush-and-ink supplies, and plan the paired lines so they have equal character counts and balanced wording.
- For placement: position the vertical scrolls on both sides of a doorway or pillar, with the horizontal inscription above.
- For a special setting: follow the relevant local or ceremonial practice rather than assuming red is used in every context.
These are general conventions described in the sources; practice can differ by setting. The available references do not establish detailed distinctions across Cantonese-speaking regions or diaspora communities.
