Italy’s “Christ the Redeemer” is the Cristo Redentore of Maratea, on Mount San Biagio in Basilicata. It is a separate monument from Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer: Maratea’s statue was completed in 1965, while Rio’s was inaugurated in 1931. Rio’s is taller, but the two differ just as much in their setting, materials and design.

How the two statues compare
| Feature | Cristo Redentore, Maratea | Christ the Redeemer, Rio |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Mount San Biagio, Maratea, Basilicata, Italy | Corcovado, in Tijuca National Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil |
| Height | 21.13 m according to Visit Maratea; the Maratea foundation reports 21.20 m | 30 m for the statue and 38 m including its pedestal, according to Riotur |
| Date | Completed in 1965 | Inaugurated on 12 October 1931 |
| Associated creators | Sculptor Bruno Innocenti; engineer Luigi Musumeci | Engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, credited by Riotur |
| Material | White cement mixed with Carrara marble chips, on a reinforced structure | Comparable material details are not stated in the cited official tourism sources |
| Arms and weight | Visit Maratea reports an arm span of about 19 m and an estimated weight of 400 tonnes; the foundation gives a 19.75 m span | Comparable figures are not stated in the cited official sources |
The height figures are published measurements from different sources, not a single harmonized survey. The Maratea reports differ by 0.07 m. For Rio, the 30 m figure describes the statue itself; the 38 m total includes its pedestal. Rio’s municipal history page also gives 38 m as the monument’s total height.
Why Rio’s statue is taller
Even when comparing statue to statue, Rio’s figure is greater: Riotur reports 30 m for the statue, against Maratea’s reported 21.13 m or 21.20 m. Comparing Rio’s full 38 m height with Maratea’s statue height would mix two measurement conventions, so the pedestal distinction matters.

Rio’s monument also occupies a much higher elevation. The city’s historical page places it on Corcovado at about 710 m above sea level. Maratea’s statue stands on the summit of Mount San Biagio, above the town, but the cited sources do not give a comparable elevation figure.
Different histories, not a replica
Maratea: conceived after a trip to Rio
Maratea’s monument was commissioned by Stefano Rivetti and designed by Florentine sculptor Bruno Innocenti. The Maratea foundation says Rivetti conceived the idea during a trip to Rio. That supports describing Rio as an inspiration for the project; it does not establish that Innocenti’s statue is a copy or replica.

Rio’s Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated on 12 October 1931. Maratea’s statue came later: the foundation records the casting as completed on 18 December 1964, followed by finishing work from 16 July through November 1965. The distinction between casting and completion explains why 1965 is given as the completion year.
How the materials and settings shape their appearance
Maratea’s concrete and marble-chip surface
Maratea’s statue was made from white cement mixed with Carrara marble chips. Its concrete and iron reinforcement is integrated with the mountain summit. It faces the Basilica of San Biagio; because of the statue’s curved back, the view can make it appear to face the sea. Maratea Welcome describes the material and orientation, while the foundation documents the making of the statue.
