A Christmas nativity scene depicts the birth of Jesus, usually with the infant lying in a manger. Also called a crèche, crib or manger scene, it turns the Bethlehem story into a visual display. Its forms range from simple home sets to elaborate works of regional craft.
What does a nativity scene represent?
The scene represents the birth of Jesus. The manger—the feeding trough in which the Gospel account says Jesus was laid—is its central image. In the 2019 apostolic letter Admirabile signum, Pope Francis explains the Catholic custom of placing a crèche at home as a way for families to remember and relive the story of Bethlehem: “Setting up the Christmas crèche in our homes helps us to relive the history of what took place in Bethlehem.” Families may understand or observe the tradition in different ways; this is the letter’s Catholic account of its meaning.

Where did the nativity scene tradition begin?
The origin most commonly associated with the living nativity scene is Saint Francis of Assisi’s 1223 representation at Greccio, Italy. According to the Vatican Governorate’s account of Greccio and the first living nativity scene, Francis enlisted local inhabitants to create a representation of the Nativity. Pope Francis also marked the event’s 800th anniversary in a 2023 General Audience.
This is the tradition’s commonly cited Franciscan origin as a living representation; it does not establish that no earlier images of the Nativity existed in other forms.

What figures belong in a nativity set?
There is no single required cast for every set. The central subject is Jesus in the manger, and many displays also depict Mary and Joseph. Other figures may expand the scene, but their inclusion depends on the maker’s design and the story the display is intended to tell. For a home display, check which figures are actually included rather than assuming every set contains the same group.
What materials are nativity scenes made from?
Nativity scenes have no standard material. Official Vatican descriptions of particular displays show how varied the choices can be:

- Style: Decide whether you want a restrained, traditional scene or a more detailed, regionally influenced look, such as Neapolitan-style figures.
- Included figures: Read the set contents and confirm that it includes the characters you want.
- Display space: Measure the surface available, including room for the manger, figures and any scenery.
These comparison points help match a set to a particular home and display; the examples above do not establish the quality or value of specific retail products.
Nativity scenes as regional craft
Some nativity scenes are not simply collections of figures but crafted displays shaped by local traditions. The Vatican Museums’ description of Neapolitan-style resin figures and the Basilica of Saint Peter’s account of artisans from San Gregorio Armeno illustrate that connection between regional style and materials. The Basilica announcement described a seasonal installation scheduled through January 7, 2026; that date is historical and is not current visitor guidance.
