A Christmas template for adding faces lets you personalize a Santa, elf, reindeer, snowman or other holiday character with a photo. Depending on the design, you either trim and glue the photo onto the printed character or use a face-in-hole opening. Check the file type, paper size and instructions before downloading.
Choose a face-addition style
Listings use phrases such as “add your own face,” “face-in-hole” and “Christmas photo template,” but the personalization method varies by file. Teachers Pay Teachers and Etsy examples include templates for individual characters and family groups; follow the selected download’s instructions rather than assuming every design works the same way.
- Photo on the character: Trim a photo to fit the template area, then glue it onto the printed body or character piece.
- Face-in-hole: Cut out the face opening or place a photo behind or over it, according to the design’s directions.
For a single Santa craft, a free template maker may be enough. For a group project or photo-booth prop, look for a multi-character or family set. Some listings include pre-colored art; others provide outlines to color.

PDF, PNG and paper size
A PDF is generally suited to printing directly. A PNG can support digital placement or editing when the listing offers that workflow. The reviewed materials include US Letter and A4 options, so check the page size against your printer paper before downloading. Stretching or shrinking a design may change how well a face photo fits its opening or placement area.
Personal, classroom and display use
Decide whether the template is for a keepsake, classroom display, card or photo-booth prop. Then read the selected file’s terms: restrictions vary, and one reviewed Etsy listing specifies personal use only. Do not assume classroom use is permitted unless the listing says so.

Print and assemble the template
- Choose a design. Decide on the character, the number of people and whether you want a photo pasted onto the artwork or a face opening.
- Check the download. Confirm PDF or PNG, US Letter or A4, included pages and any usage restrictions.
- Print the template. Use the paper type and size recommended by the instructions. If the design has separate pieces, keep them together while assembling.
- Fit the photo. For a cut-and-glue design, place the template piece over the photo, trace its shape with a thin marker and cut the photo out. This method is described in Sam’s Santa craft tutorial at Simple Everyday Mom.
- Attach and assemble. Glue the trimmed photo onto the character. For a face-in-hole design, cut the opening or position the photo as its directions specify, then assemble any remaining pieces.
- Add decorations if you like. The Santa craft instructions suggest snowflake stickers and a thin marker as optional embellishments.
Gather the craft materials
- Printed template and a face photo
- Colored cardstock or construction paper
- Scissors and glue
- Optional: snowflake stickers and a thin marker
Cardstock is useful when the design includes heavier additions. Mary’s Printables recommends cardstock for a Santa hat that will carry glue and cotton balls, noting that ordinary copy paper may droop under the added material. For a simpler flat photo craft, use the paper suggested by the template’s own instructions; common household scissors and glue may be sufficient.
