Canada Day 2025 was Tuesday, July 1. It marked the 158th anniversary of Confederation, and the year’s federal program also recognized 60 years of the national flag. The events and offers described below were specific to 2025 and have passed.

Why is Canada Day on July 1?

The Constitution Act, 1867 created Canada on July 1, 1867. On June 20, 1868, Governor General Lord Monck signed a proclamation calling for celebrations on July 1. A federal law made the date a statutory holiday in 1879 as the anniversary of Confederation; it later became known as Dominion Day. On October 27, 1982, Dominion Day officially became Canada Day. Canadian Heritage’s history timeline sets out these milestones.

What is the legal holiday date?

The federal Holidays Act names July 1 Canada Day unless July 1 falls on a Sunday; in that case, July 2 is the legal holiday. Since July 1, 2025 was a Tuesday, the Sunday exception did not apply.

The Act establishes the federal holiday date, but it does not determine every worker’s pay or leave entitlement. Those can depend on the applicable jurisdiction and individual employment circumstances, so check the relevant employment standards authority or workplace policy for a specific case.

What happened for Canada Day 2025?

National flag anniversary

The 2025 program marked 60 years of Canada’s national flag, tying the year’s theme to an important national symbol. The anniversary was part of that year’s programming, not a recurring annual theme. Canadian Heritage’s announcement described the 2025 theme.

Broadcasts and Ottawa–Gatineau events

Canadian Heritage said the national noon ceremony and evening show were available on CBC and Radio-Canada platforms. Its announcement also identified the Supreme Court as an official festivities site and invited visitors to visit free of charge. A separate ministerial message described free activities at four official Ottawa–Gatineau sites and hundreds of venues across Canada. These were 2025 program details, not a current event schedule. The program announcement and the June 2025 ministerial message provide the details.

O Canada! Station contest

From May 29 to July 2, 2025, eligible videos recorded at O Canada! Station or online were entered for a chance to win one of two VIA Rail trips, each valued at up to $15,000. The entry period has ended; the announced prize value was not a regular fare or an ongoing offer. Canadian Heritage’s 2025 announcement described the contest.

How do people celebrate, and what is open?

Canadian Heritage’s general overview describes Canada Day celebrations such as ceremonies, shows, music and fireworks, and points readers to regional activity listings. The way people mark the day varies; the official history frames it as an occasion to reflect on Canadian identity and recognize the country’s land, diversity, culture, contributions and people. The Canada Day overview explains the kinds of activities associated with the holiday.

There is no single nationwide list of businesses, services or attractions that are open on Canada Day. Hours and event arrangements vary by community and organization. For a particular place or activity, check the local organizer’s or business’s current notice rather than assuming it follows a national schedule.
