For a cut Christmas tree, choose one with fresh, resilient needles, make a fresh cut at the trunk base, and put it promptly in a water-holding stand. Keep the reservoir filled, place the tree at least three feet from heat, check light cords, keep exits clear, and remove the tree after Christmas or as soon as it dries. An artificial tree avoids watering and annual tree disposal, but its environmental comparison with a real tree depends on how many seasons it is reused and how the real tree would be discarded.
How do you choose a fresh real Christmas tree?
Check the needles before buying a cut tree. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises choosing one whose needles are green, hard to pull from branches, and do not break when bent. The trunk butt of a fresh tree should be sticky with resin. If bouncing the trunk produces a shower of needles, the tree may already be too dry.
After bringing it home, cut about two inches from the base of the trunk to expose fresh wood. Set the tree in a sturdy stand that holds water and get the trunk into water promptly. CPSC recommends keeping the stand filled while the tree is displayed. CPSC holiday decoration safety tips.
How do you keep a real Christmas tree from drying out?
Keep the trunk in water
Check the stand reservoir every day and refill it as needed. Indiana Department of Natural Resources guidance explains that sap can clog a cut tree’s water-carrying vessels; if the tree has been out of water, recut about half an inch from the trunk before placing it back in water. The agency notes that a tree may use up to a quart of water a day during its first few days indoors. That is a state-specific care estimate, not a fixed amount for every tree; the stand’s water level and the tree’s condition are the practical checks. Indiana DNR: Real Christmas Trees.
Keep it away from heat
Place the tree at least three feet from fireplaces, radiators, candles, and other heat sources. Heat can accelerate drying. If the needles become brittle or drop readily, remove the tree rather than continuing to display it.

How do you display a Christmas tree safely?
- Keep the tree at least three feet from heat sources and do not place it where it blocks an exit.
- Inspect light strands before use. Do not use strands with frayed or pinched wires, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how many strands may be connected.
- Turn tree lights off before leaving home or going to bed.
- Water a cut tree daily and keep its stand reservoir filled. A dry tree can burn very hot and fast; watering reduces drying but does not make a tree fireproof.
- Remove a live tree after Christmas or when it is dry.
The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) attributes almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires to electrical problems, citing the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). NIST’s summary of fire experiments reports that a watered tree did not ignite when exposed to the same ignition source as a dry tree; that result illustrates the importance of moisture, not immunity from ignition. Is a real or artificial Christmas tree better?
The choice depends on the household’s priorities: annual watering and cleanup versus storage and reuse, sensitivities to sap or dust and mold, and how long an artificial tree will be used. The available environmental figures come from an industry account of a 2010 lifecycle analysis, not a current universal comparison.

The American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA) reports that PE International’s 2010 analysis estimated an artificial tree needed to be used for 3.6 to 4 years to reach a net global-warming contribution benefit compared with buying a real tree annually; the estimate depended on the real tree’s disposal. ACTA also reports that the analysis attributed less than 0.1% of an average person’s annual carbon footprint to Christmas trees. Both figures are study-specific, reported by a trade association, and should not be treated as a current lifecycle verdict for every product or disposal route. When should you take down a live tree?
Remove a cut tree after Christmas or earlier if it dries out. Do not keep displaying it once the needles have become brittle or are dropping readily. Follow local disposal options for the tree rather than leaving it indoors as it dries. USFA holiday fire safety guidance.
