Choose a photo frame by matching its image opening to your print, then decide whether a mat, protective glazing or preservation-grade materials suit the photograph and where it will be displayed. Check whether a listed size refers to the image opening, mat window or frame’s outside dimensions; those measurements are not interchangeable.
What size photo frame do I need?
Measure the print itself and compare that measurement with the frame’s stated image opening. A frame’s outside dimensions describe how much wall or tabletop space it takes up, not the size of print it holds. If the frame includes a mat, check the mat-window size as well: the window may cover a portion of the print edge.

- Image opening: Make sure the frame is intended for that print size.
- Mat window: Check how much of the image or edge will remain visible.
- Placement: Confirm wall or tabletop use, orientation, and the frame’s overall footprint.
For example, when shopping for a 4×6 photo frame, verify that “4×6” means the intended image opening and not the outside dimensions or a mat window. There is no universal size chart established here, so rely on the measurements in the specific listing.

Should a photo touch the glass in a frame?
For an original or a photograph you want to protect, use a window mat or spacers to keep the glazing from touching its surface. The National Archives and Records Administration advises: “Use a window mat or spacers, so the glass or acrylic is not touching the surface of the original.” A mat also changes the visible composition by covering part of the print edge; consider that when choosing the opening.
This precaution is especially relevant to preservation-conscious framing. A casual, replaceable print does not necessarily require museum-grade materials, but keeping glazing off a valuable photograph helps avoid direct contact.

Do I need UV glass for a photo?
Consider UV-filtering glass or acrylic for a valuable photograph displayed where sunlight or fluorescent lighting is present. The National Archives and Records Administration says: “Use ultraviolet filtering glass or acrylic in the frame.” UV filtering is not a guarantee against fading or other light-related damage: the Archives also recommends limiting both the duration and intensity of light exposure.

Which framing materials are suitable for valuable photographs?
Preservation-conscious framing depends on the materials that surround the photograph, including the mat board, backing, hinges and glazing. National Archives and Library of Congress guidance points to chemically stable materials and photo-suitable mat board rather than treating the frame moulding alone as protective.
- Mat board: National Archives guidance calls for cotton rag or 100% chemically purified pulp, buffered or pH-neutral/acid-free, and passed by the Photographic Activity Test for use with photographs. The Library of Congress describes cotton rag or chemically purified, lignin-free wood pulp that is neutral or slightly alkaline and has passed that test.
- Glazing: The Library of Congress recommends UV-opaque acrylic and spacing between the object and glazing for preservation framing.
- Other surrounding materials: Consider the backing and hinges as part of the material choice; preservation guidance emphasizes chemical stability throughout the framing assembly.
These are preservation recommendations for photographs that warrant extra care, not a requirement that every everyday print be framed to archival standards.

Is glass or acrylic better for a picture frame?
Neither material is best for every image and display location. The choice depends on the photograph or other medium, the surrounding materials and the protection priorities. Acrylic is an option in preservation framing, but it is not suitable for every kind of artwork: the National Archives cautions against acrylic for pastels and other powdery or flaking media because static electricity can be generated. If the frame will hold something other than a photograph, take the medium into account before choosing glazing.

Digital photo frames
A digital frame is a separate option for rotating a collection of images instead of displaying one fixed print. Digital Camera World’s October 2026 guide identifies screen size, display technology, orientation, aspect ratio and connectivity as factors to consider. Check current model specifications and features before buying.
