Guru Purnima is a full-moon observance in the Hindu month of Ashadha, usually in June or July, that honors teachers, mentors and spiritual guides. Its meaning and customs vary across Hindu, Buddhist and Jain communities, but gratitude for guidance is a shared theme.
What is Guru Purnima?
“Purnima” means full moon. Maharashtra’s Directorate of Tourism explains “guru” as one who removes darkness or ignorance. Together, the words name a day associated with honoring those who share knowledge and offer guidance.
The date follows the lunar calendar, so its Gregorian date changes each year. For a specific year and location, consult a current local panchang rather than relying on a fixed calendar date.

Why is Guru Purnima celebrated?
The observance carries distinct meanings in different religious traditions; it should not be reduced to a single origin story.
| Tradition | Association with the day |
|---|---|
| Hindu | Also known as Vyasa Purnima, it is traditionally associated with Veda Vyasa. This is a religious tradition, not proof of the historical date of Vyasa’s birth. |
| Buddhist | Buddhists commemorate the Buddha’s first sermon at Sarnath. |
| Jain | Jains associate the occasion with Mahavira gaining his first follower. |
In a distinct yogic account, Sadhguru of Isha Foundation describes Adiyogi becoming a guru and transmitting yogic science to seven disciples on this full-moon day. That is a tradition-specific account, not a universally accepted historical explanation.

How is Guru Purnima celebrated?
Customs depend on the community, family and setting. Possible observances include:
- Offering puja or visiting a temple.
- Taking part in bhajans, satsang or a spiritual discourse.
- Schools and students paying tribute to teachers.
- Making offerings such as flowers, fruit or sweets where customary.
- Spending time in meditation, service or personal reflection.
These are possibilities, not requirements. Fasting, performing puja, giving gifts or buying a devotional set is not necessary to mark the day. A sincere message of thanks to a teacher or mentor can be a meaningful way to celebrate.
