Colored smoke is a visible cloud of colored aerosol made by a purpose-built smoke device. It is used for effects, photography, training and some testing, but the smoke can irritate airways and devices may be regulated. For a colored look in theatrical fog, changing the light with colored lamps or filters is a different approach that does not add dye to the fog.

Colored smoke is not simply colored water vapor. At a high level, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) describes smoke-producing compositions as involving an oxidizer, a fuel, sometimes a coolant, and one or more dyes. Heat carries dye out of the device; as it cools in the surrounding air, the dye condenses into small colored aerosol particles, as described in a 2024 review of colored smoke devices.

Documented applications include special effects, photography, firefighter training, HVAC testing and leak detection in sewers or trucks and trailers. Manufacturers also use category labels such as “Photography Smoke Bombs.” That describes a product category, not a recommendation that a specific device is suitable for every shoot or location. Why colored smoke devices may be regulated
In the United States, ATF says a smoke-producing device that contains explosive materials is subject to federal explosives law under 18 U.S.C. Chapter 40 and 27 CFR Part 555 unless an exception applies. Whether an exception or a particular classification applies can depend on the item and circumstances; ATF notes that a determination may be needed for a specific device. The agency also says smoke devices generally do not meet a particular exemption.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission sets construction and performance requirements for consumer smoke devices, including provisions concerning external flame and exterior plastic in direct contact with the composition. These federal sources do not establish that a particular product is legal to buy, possess, transport or use everywhere. Product classification, intended use, permissions and local rules matter; check with the relevant authorities for a concrete use scenario.

Exposure and handling cautions
Smoke can irritate and provoke coughing. Enola Gaye Canada says emissions vary with atmospheric and environmental conditions and warns that people with asthma or COPD may be adversely affected. Its characterization of its own products as “not toxic” is manufacturer-specific; it does not rule out irritation or establish the emissions of other products.
- Read and follow the exact product instructions and safety data sheet (SDS); different devices may have different directions.
- Avoid unnecessary inhalation and control exposure, particularly around people with respiratory conditions.
- Do not modify a device or add dye or other chemicals. Ontario film and television safety guidance recommends using commercially manufactured smoke and fog products as directed.
- Follow the product-specific directions if a device misfires. Enola Gaye Canada provides waiting and protective-equipment instructions for its products; do not assume those steps apply to another device.
For colored theatrical fog, change the light instead
If the goal is to make theatrical fog look colored, Ontario guidance recommends colored light rather than adding dyes or chemicals to the fog product. A Swedish event-safety guide likewise recommends colored filters on the light shining through smoke. Lighting changes the color appearance of the illuminated cloud; it does not turn the aerosol itself into colored smoke. Use atmospheric-effect products as directed and consult their safety sheets.
