Choose a photo frame as a complete package, not just a moulding: the frame, glazing, mat, backing, spacers and mounting all affect appearance, handling and preservation. For a valuable or fragile photograph, prioritize documented material specifications and keep the image from touching the glazing. For everyday display, balance weight, breakage and scratch risks with the room and the frame’s size.

The visible frame structure is only one part of the assembly. A framed photograph may also include glazing, a mat, backing, a barrier between the moulding and the artwork package, spacers and a mounting method. Each component can affect contact with the photograph, structural support and resistance to environmental risks. The Library of Congress describes preservation matting and framing as materials and methods intended to limit environmental risks to a displayed object, including light, water, humidity, pollutants and surrounding materials: Library of Congress: Matting and Framing.
#1 Best Overall

- SAFETY AND DURABLE: This 8x10 frame is very sturdy, and high-definition plexiglass is specially chosen to replace traditional glass, which ensures safety and effectively prevents the risk of injuries caused by accidental breakage.
- PROTECTIVE PACKAGING: The 8 by 10 picture frames come with special corner protectors and plastic sealing. Before using, please remember to tear off the double-sided protective film on the plastic panel to get a clear photo effect.
- MULTIPLE SCENARIO MATCH: The classic black design of the 8 x 10 frame can blend seamlessly with a variety of decorative styles, serving as a subtle accent for displaying any content, rather than standing out.

Before choosing by appearance, ask what each component is made of and whether it is suitable for the particular photograph and display conditions. A label such as “archival” or “museum-quality” does not, on its own, establish what the materials are or whether they are appropriate.
How do wood, metal and plastic frames compare?
Wood, metal and plastic are common options, but no one material is best for every photograph. Check that the frame is strong enough to support the full assembly, especially for a large or heavy frame, and consider whether the frame material is compatible with long-term display needs.

- Wood: Wood frames can release harmful chemicals into the package. For preservation framing, the Library of Congress allows wood or metal but recommends a barrier along a wood frame’s rabbet—the inner ledge that holds the package—to limit acid migration into the mat package. The Florida Department of State advises against wood frames for long-term display or storage of valuable art or photographs. Library of Congress guidance; Florida Department of State archives guidance.
- Metal: The Library of Congress includes metal among the acceptable frame structures for preservation framing. The consumer guidance from the South Carolina Library describes aluminum as inert toward photographs; other metals may need sealing to protect against corrosion. Library of Congress; South Carolina Library consumer guide.
- Plastic: Plastic is another common moulding option. Confirm that the frame can safely support the glazing, mat and backing as a complete package; the sources do not establish that all plastic frame products have the same strength or preservation properties.
Glass or acrylic: what is the real difference?
The Canadian Conservation Institute identifies glass and plastic as the two most common glazing materials. Glass resists scratching better, but it is heavier and fragile. Plastic glazing, often acrylic, is lighter and less prone to breakage, but it scratches more easily. Both categories include UV-filtering and anti-reflective options; check the particular product rather than assuming those features are standard. Canadian Conservation Institute, Note 11/3: Glazing Materials; South Carolina Library consumer guide.

| Glazing | Practical advantage | Trade-off | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass | More scratch resistant | Heavier and fragile | Scratch resistance matters and the frame can safely bear the weight. |
| Plastic or acrylic | Lighter and less prone to breakage | More easily scratched | Lower weight or reduced breakage risk is important, and careful cleaning is manageable. |
Whichever glazing you choose, leave clearance between it and the photograph. A sufficiently thick mat or spacers can prevent contact and reduce risks including image transfer, staining and mould growth. The Library of Congress recommends at least 4-ply mat board and backing board at least 3 mm thick for its preservation package recommendations; these are technical specifications, not universal requirements for every decorative frame. The Canadian Conservation Institute also says glazing should generally be cut 3 mm smaller than the inside rebate to allow for material movement. A package that is too tight can snap glass or bow plastic. Library of Congress; Canadian Conservation Institute.

Which mat board is suitable for photographs?
For a photograph, choose mat board by documented specifications rather than by color or a broad marketing claim. The Library of Congress calls for mat board used with photographs to pass the Photographic Activity Test (PAT). ISO 18902 is a broader framing-material specification described in the South Carolina Library consumer guide. These are ways to evaluate materials; neither “acid-free” nor “archival” alone tells you that a product meets them. Library of Congress; South Carolina Library consumer guide.
MoMA recommends mat board made from 100% rag or lignin-free cellulose and cautions that alkaline-buffered board may harm some photographs. Because photographic processes differ, do not assume that buffered board is right for every print; check the photograph’s needs and the board’s specifications. What backing, barriers and mounting should you use?
Backing and mounting complete the package. Their suitability depends on the photograph, frame and exposure to moisture. For its preservation framing recommendations, the Library of Congress identifies acid-free, lignin-free corrugated board with an additional moisture barrier, or corrugated polyethylene or polypropylene. A barrier along the rabbet is especially relevant when the moulding is wood.

How should you choose between two frame packages?
Compare the whole build against the photograph and its setting, rather than choosing on moulding material alone:
- Support: Check that the frame and hanging hardware can support the full assembly at its size and weight.
- Contact and compatibility: Confirm that the image will not touch glazing, that the mat and other materials have specifications appropriate to the photograph, and that wood is isolated from the package where preservation framing requires it.
- Handling risk: Weigh glass’s scratch resistance against its weight and fragility, or acrylic’s lower weight and breakage risk against its greater scratch sensitivity.
- Viewing: Compare available UV-filtering and anti-reflective options against the display location and viewing needs. UV-filtering glazing does not remove the effects of visible light exposure.
- Care: For plastic glazing, avoid abrasive cleaning methods and follow the manufacturer’s directions, particularly for coated products.
How do you protect the framed photograph after choosing materials?
Even a carefully selected package cannot prevent all damage from display conditions. Keep framed photographs out of direct intense light and away from radiators, vents, high humidity and leak-prone areas. For a valuable, fragile, oversized or unusual photograph, a professional framer or photograph conservator can help match materials and mounting to the object. The preservation guidance cited here is strongest for photographs and other works on paper, not every kind of photo display.
