Para hacer cerámica necesitas una pasta compatible con el horno y el esmalte, preparar bien la arcilla, formar la pieza, secarla por completo y completar dos cocciones: bizcocho y cocción final. Puedes trabajar a mano, con torno o con molde; si no tienes horno cerámico, un taller es la opción más segura.
Antes de empezar: materiales y seguridad
Reúne arcilla cerámica para modelar, agua, una superficie estable, herramientas de corte y modelado, esponja, barbotina, engobe o pigmentos, esmalte y protección adecuada. Comprueba en la ficha técnica de la pasta su rango de cocción y verifica que coincida con el esmalte y el horno. La arcilla debe amasarse hasta alcanzar una humedad uniforme, como establece la definición profesional recogida por el BOE (1998).

- Trabaja con ventilación y evita inhalar polvo de arcilla o esmalte; limpia en húmedo en lugar de barrer en seco.
- No enciendas un horno sin conocer su programa, carga máxima, ventilación y controles.
- Si eres principiante y no tienes horno, entrega la pieza a un taller que controle carga, temperatura y enfriamiento.
Los 9 pasos para hacer cerámica
1. Reúne los materiales y elige la pasta
Decide primero qué quieres fabricar y qué uso tendrá. Para una taza, por ejemplo, elige una pasta apta para vajilla únicamente si el fabricante confirma su compatibilidad con el esmalte y el ciclo de cocción. La arcilla de baja, media o alta temperatura no es intercambiable: el horno debe alcanzar el rango indicado y el esmalte debe estar formulado para esa misma pasta.
- Arcilla cerámica y recipiente para pequeñas cantidades de agua.
- Rodillo, alambres, estecas, cuchillo, regla y esponja.
- Barbotina para unir piezas, engobe o pigmento y esmalte.
- Guantes, mascarilla adecuada para polvo y protección ocular cuando el procedimiento lo requiera.
2. Amasa y acondiciona la arcilla
Amasa la pasta para homogeneizar la humedad y expulsar bolsas de aire antes de modelar. El acondicionamiento previo es un requisito de la operación cerámica profesional. Si la arcilla está demasiado seca, se agrieta; si está demasiado blanda, pierde la forma. Añade humedad gradualmente y vuelve a amasar hasta obtener una consistencia uniforme.

3. Elige una técnica y forma la pieza
Para una pieza pequeña puedes trabajar sin torno mediante pellizco, rollos o placas. También puedes usar torno o molde; el INAH documenta estas dos últimas formas de modelado (2019).

Elige según el resultado que buscas, el nivel de detalle y el equipo disponible; ninguna técnica es universalmente superior.
4. Une, alisa y comprueba el grosor
Para unir dos partes, raya ambas superficies, humedécelas con barbotina y presiónalas hasta que la unión quede continua. Alisa el interior y el exterior con una herramienta o esponja. Comprueba el grosor en la base, las paredes y el borde: los cambios bruscos concentran tensiones y favorecen grietas o despegues durante el secado y la cocción.
5. Seca lentamente y por completo
Coloca la pieza en un lugar ventilado, protegida de corrientes fuertes y del sol directo. Cúbrela de forma parcial si unas zonas se secan mucho antes que otras y gírala con cuidado cuando tenga suficiente firmeza. No existe un tiempo universal: influyen el tamaño, el grosor, la humedad ambiental y el tipo de arcilla. Antes de hornear, toda la pieza debe estar completamente seca; cualquier humedad atrapada puede generar vapor y romperla.

6. Haz la primera cocción: el bizcocho
Cuando la pieza esté seca, colócala en el horno siguiendo la ficha de la pasta y el programa del taller. El bizcocho endurece la arcilla antes de decorarla. La carga, el tamaño de las piezas, la cantidad y los controles de temperatura afectan al resultado; la cocción es una fase compleja que requiere supervisión, como advierte Terracotta Museu y recoge la normativa profesional del BOE.

Un taller puede programar el ciclo, separar piezas incompatibles y verificar el enfriamiento sin abrir el horno antes de tiempo.
7. Decora y esmalta en el estado indicado
Después del bizcocho, limpia el polvo de la pieza y aplica engobe, pigmento o esmalte solo cuando el fabricante lo indique. El MITECO sitúa el esmaltado después de la cocción de bizcocho en el flujo habitual. Respeta el espesor recomendado, evita cubrir la base que apoyará en la placa del horno y deja secar la capa antes de la siguiente manipulación.
Esmaltar no garantiza por sí solo impermeabilidad ni seguridad alimentaria. Para una taza, plato o cuenco, confirma que tanto la pasta como el esmalte estén certificados para contacto con alimentos y que la cocción alcance el ciclo especificado.

8. Realiza la cocción final
Programa el segundo horneado según la ficha del esmalte y de la pasta. Las temperaturas varían mucho entre procesos: el MITECO describe entre 1320 y 1430 °C para cocciones de barnizado industrial, mientras que una norma mexicana de 1998 fija 800 °C como mínimo para un proceso regulado concreto. Ninguna de esas cifras sirve como regla general para todas las piezas domésticas.

El taller debe confirmar que horno, pasta y esmalte pertenecen al mismo rango.
9. Enfría, revisa y decide el uso
Deja que el horno se enfríe lentamente antes de abrirlo; el enfriamiento gradual reduce el riesgo de roturas, una precaución señalada por el MAN. Al sacar la pieza, revisa:
- Grietas, deformaciones o zonas que se hayan despegado.
- Bordes cortantes y superficies ásperas.
- Cobertura, escurrimientos y adhesión del esmalte.
- Compatibilidad certificada con alimentos si la pieza se usará para comer o beber.
Si no puedes confirmar esa certificación, destina la pieza a uso decorativo.

¿Se puede hacer cerámica en casa?
Sí, puedes modelar en casa con pellizco, rollos o placas. La cocción requiere un horno cerámico correctamente instalado y programado; un horno doméstico de cocina no sustituye a uno diseñado para cerámica. Sin horno propio, modela y seca la pieza en casa y acuerda con un taller la carga, el programa y el enfriamiento.
Respuestas rápidas a las dudas más comunes
¿Qué arcilla necesito para una taza?
Una pasta cerámica cuyo rango de cocción sea compatible con el horno y con un esmalte certificado para uso alimentario. La etiqueta debe especificar esas condiciones; no basta con que la arcilla se endurezca.
¿Se puede hacer cerámica sin torno?
Sí. El pellizco, los rollos, las placas y los moldes permiten crear piezas funcionales o decorativas sin torno, aunque ofrecen distinto control de simetría, grosor y detalle.
¿Cuánto debe secarse la arcilla?
Hasta que esté completamente seca, no durante un número fijo de horas. El tamaño, grosor, ambiente y pasta determinan la duración.
¿A qué temperatura se cuece la cerámica?
Depende de la pasta, el esmalte y el proceso. Sigue siempre las fichas técnicas y el programa del taller; no extrapoles temperaturas de procesos industriales o normas específicas.
