Consistent Character Control in Midjourney with Multiple Characters

Midjourney can improve consistency across several recurring characters, but it does not lock separate characters independently. Use one clean cast reference with V7 Omni Reference, fixed character descriptions, moderate weights, and a repair workflow for difficult scenes.

Midjourney can keep multiple characters broadly recognizable, but it does not currently offer separate, independently controlled character-reference slots in the documented workflow. The most reliable approach is to create one clean cast reference containing everyone, use it with V7 Omni Reference, describe each character separately, and plan to correct difficult results in Midjourney’s Editor or a layer-based image editor.

That distinction matters: Omni Reference can reduce identity drift, but it is not a guarantee that faces, clothing, proportions, or markings will remain exact in every pose and scene.

The current limitation: one reference image, not one slot per character

Midjourney’s documented Omni Reference workflow accepts one image. That image may contain several people, creatures, or objects, but you cannot currently attach one Omni Reference image to Character A and a different one to Character B in the same prompt.

For a two-character series, the practical workaround is therefore a single composite reference: a character sheet, a manually assembled image, or one clear scene containing both recurring characters. Midjourney recommends describing the characters in the text prompt because the reference image does not communicate every detail required by the new scene.

In V7, the relevant syntax is --oref IMAGE_URL, with reference strength controlled by --ow VALUE. The documented Omni weight range is 1–1,000 and the default is 100. Midjourney warns that very high values—particularly above approximately 400—can become unpredictable, especially with high stylize values. See the official Omni Reference documentation.

V6 and Niji 6 use the older Character Reference syntax, --cref IMAGE_URL, with --cw VALUE. Do not present --cref as the current V7 method; V7 uses Omni Reference instead. The compatibility distinction is documented on Midjourney’s Character Reference page.

Build a cast reference sheet before generating scenes

A dramatic finished illustration is usually a poor identity reference. It contains too much composition, lighting, perspective, and environmental information. A better cast sheet maximizes information about the characters while minimizing information about the scene.

Use this layout

  • Put Character A on the left and Character B on the right.
  • Use similar scale for both figures.
  • Choose full-body or three-quarter views, with faces clearly visible.
  • Give each character distinctive hair, silhouette, clothing colors, accessories, and markings.
  • Use a simple background and comparable lighting.
  • Keep faces, hands, and limbs separate rather than overlapping.

For example, make the left figure a slim woman with short black hair, round glasses, and a mustard-yellow jacket. Make the right figure a taller man with long red hair, a green coat, black boots, and a scar over his left eyebrow. Spatial separation gives the prompt a stronger basis for connecting traits to the correct person.

Avoid weak reference sheets

  • Hugging, fighting, or other poses with overlapping bodies.
  • One character much smaller than the other.
  • Heavy shadows, masks, helmets, sunglasses, or props covering the face.
  • A crowded scene with background people.
  • Several costumes for the same character in one image.
  • Strongly different rendering styles or lighting on the two figures.

Do not depend on embedded text labels to solve identity. Labels can help you organize your files, but the visual separation, fixed attributes, and prompt wording do the important work.

Set up Omni Reference in Midjourney

Web workflow

  1. Open Midjourney’s Create page.
  2. Select V7 as the generation version.
  3. Open the image-reference menu beside the Imagine bar.
  4. Upload the cast sheet and designate it as an Omni Reference.
  5. Write a prompt that describes the scene and each character independently.
  6. Start with moderate Omni Strength rather than maximum strength.
  7. Generate several candidates, then vary the strongest composition.

On the web, an uploaded image can be assigned as an Omni Reference, Image Prompt, or Style Reference. The relevant interface guidance is in Midjourney’s Creating on Web documentation.

Discord workflow

two recurring characters standing beside a red bicycle:
Character A is on the left, a slim woman with short black hair, round glasses,
a mustard-yellow jacket, blue jeans, and white sneakers;
Character B is on the right, a tall man with long red hair, a green wool coat,
black boots, and a small scar over his left eyebrow;
both characters looking toward the camera, full-body editorial illustration,
clear separation between the two figures, soft afternoon light, clean background
--v 7 --oref IMAGE_URL --ow 200 --ar 16:9

Replace IMAGE_URL with an accessible image URL. In Discord, upload a local file first so Midjourney provides an image URL that can be used in the command.

Practical starting settings

  • --v 7: use the model documented as compatible with Omni Reference.
  • --ow 100–250: a sensible starting range near the default.
  • --ow 250–400: try this when identity is drifting substantially, while watching for unwanted pose or clothing transfer.
  • Keep stylize moderate while solving identity.
  • Use a stable aspect ratio, such as --ar 16:9 for cinematic scenes or --ar 2:3 for portraits.
  • Keep chaos low when repeatability matters.

These are workflow starting points, not guarantees. A higher Omni weight can strengthen the reference influence, but it can also make clothing, pose, and other details less predictable. Avoid jumping directly to --ow 800 or --ow 1000.

Omni Reference generations use twice the GPU time of regular V7 generations. The feature is also not currently compatible with Fast Mode, Draft Mode, Conversational Mode, --q 4, Vary Region, Pan, or Zoom Out in the normal workflow. Those restrictions are listed in the official feature documentation.

Write prompts that keep the characters distinct

Use a fixed character-bible block in every prompt. Change the scene and action, but keep each character’s defining description stable.

[scene and action]

Character A:
[fixed identity description]

Character B:
[fixed identity description]

[style, lighting, camera, composition]

A more specific example:

A rainy train-station platform at dusk, Character A handing Character B a letter.

Character A: short black hair, round glasses, mustard-yellow jacket,
blue jeans, white sneakers, slim build, left side of the frame.

Character B: long red hair, green wool coat, black boots, scar over the left eyebrow,
tall build, right side of the frame.

Keep both characters fully visible and visually distinct. Do not exchange their
clothing, hair, facial traits, or positions. Cinematic graphic-novel illustration,
muted colors, soft rain, medium-wide shot
--v 7 --oref IMAGE_URL --ow 180 --ar 16:9

Prompting rules that help

  • Use the same names or labels consistently, but do not assume labels alone guarantee identity.
  • Repeat the important physical description in every scene.
  • State left/right placement when it matters.
  • Assign actions explicitly: “Character A holds the letter; Character B reaches for it.”
  • Use relational descriptions rather than vague group wording.
  • State “both characters fully visible” for scenes where disappearance is a risk.
  • Keep identity instructions separate from style and camera instructions.
  • Change one major variable at a time while you are stabilizing the cast.

Avoid ambiguous wording such as “two friends, one with…” when the result must preserve who owns which trait. Midjourney’s reference system is guidance, not a database of locked attributes; exact freckles, logos, garments, facial details, and proportions may still drift.

Separate character identity from visual style

Omni Reference is for preserving the appearance or form of the referenced subjects. A Style Reference is for transferring the broader visual treatment: palette, medium, lighting, texture, or rendering language. It is not intended to copy a person or object. See Midjourney’s Style Reference documentation.

Use this order:

  1. Stabilize the characters with Omni Reference.
  2. Keep the model, aspect ratio, Omni image, and prompt structure stable.
  3. Add a Style Reference after the cast is reasonably recognizable.
  4. If identity weakens, reduce competing style complexity or stylize before adding more references.

Style Reference can be combined with Omni Reference, but the two tools do different jobs. A stable style reference may make a comic or campaign look like one series; it does not independently lock Character A’s face or Character B’s clothing.

Build a repeatable production system

For a comic, storyboard, children’s book, or campaign, consistency comes from controlling the whole pipeline rather than finding one perfect prompt.

Create a character bible

  • Canonical name and role.
  • Hair, eye color, skin tone, face shape, height, and body type.
  • Signature clothing and accessories.
  • Distinguishing marks.
  • Typical expressions and relationship to other characters.
  • Preferred visual style.
  • Cast-sheet file and image URL.
  • Prompt template, model version, reference weights, aspect ratio, and style settings.

Lock the variables that should not drift

Keep the following stable: model version, Omni Reference image, Omni weight, Style Reference and style weight, aspect ratio, rendering vocabulary, character descriptions, and intended output format.

Then change only one major variable at a time: scene, pose, camera angle, lighting, clothing, expression, or number of characters. If the face, costume, camera, and art style all change at once, you will not know which change caused the failure.

Keep a hero reference

Choose the clearest successful image of the cast and preserve it. If a later scene gets both characters right, crop or assemble its strongest identity evidence into a cleaner cast sheet—but do not continually replace the reference with a weaker or busier image merely because it is newer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For difficult wide shots, a clean cast sheet is often more useful than a previous image whose successful composition introduces unwanted pose or wardrobe cues.

Troubleshooting multiple-character drift

Problem Likely cause Recovery
Characters swap clothing The prompt does not connect garments strongly enough to the correct subject. Use left/right placement, separate labeled blocks, explicit action ownership, and “do not exchange clothing.” Simplify the scene and try a clearer reference. If clothing transfer is excessive, lower Omni weight.
Both become generic versions of one person The reference lacks contrast or one face dominates. Use clearly different hairstyles, silhouettes, clothing colors, accessories, and marks. Keep the figures at similar scale and increase Omni weight moderately.
One character disappears The scene is crowded, the character is occluded, or another subject has higher prompt priority. Start with a simple two-person scene. Request both characters fully visible and use a medium-wide or full-body composition.
Portraits work, wide shots drift Faces occupy too few pixels and compete with the environment. Reinforce silhouette, wardrobe, and accessories. Establish a medium shot first, then try wider scenes or composite the figures into a generated background.
Characters remain recognizable but style changes Model, style vocabulary, personalization, or Style Reference settings changed. Lock the model and style settings, reuse the same --sref and style weight, and remove contradictory medium or lighting terms.
Omni Reference cannot be used with a desired edit control Feature incompatibility. Open the image in the Editor after removing the Omni Reference and --ow parameters, or use an external compositor.
V8.2 does not expose Omni Reference The current documentation still describes the feature as V7-only. Select V7 for the reference stage and recheck Midjourney’s live Version and Omni Reference pages.

Repair the result in Midjourney’s Editor

Move to the Editor when the overall composition works but one face, garment, hand, prop, or placement is wrong. The Editor supports painting and erasing, layers, resizing, reordering, flattening, and Retexture. With layers, only transparent areas are regenerated while visible areas remain unchanged. See the Editor documentation.

  1. Select the best overall composition rather than the image with the best isolated face.
  2. Open it in the Editor.
  3. Add a layer or reference image if a corrected character is needed.
  4. Erase only the region requiring regeneration.
  5. Keep the unaffected character visible.
  6. Use a short prompt describing only the correction.
  7. Generate several options and choose the least disruptive result.
  8. Undo and reduce the erased area if the correction damages nearby details.

There is a version caveat: Midjourney’s Editor documentation says V8.1 images can be opened in the Editor, while the Editor’s functionality is currently based on V6.1. Gallery images made with Omni Reference may need to be opened through the Edit tab after removing the Omni Reference and --ow parameters.

For serious multi-character work, external compositing can be more controllable. Generate Character A and Character B separately when necessary, then assemble them with masks, layers, perspective adjustments, and color correction in Photoshop, Photopea, Affinity, or GIMP. This requires more manual work, but it gives you direct control over placement and prevents one regeneration from damaging the other character.

When Midjourney is the right tool—and when it is not

Midjourney is a good fit when:

  • You value atmosphere, visual exploration, and stylistic range.
  • Approximate identity consistency is acceptable.
  • You can curate generations and iterate.
  • You need fast concept development.
  • You can perform cleanup or compositing afterward.

Be cautious when:

  • Exact facial identity is mission-critical.
  • The same cast must remain stable across dozens or hundreds of images.
  • Characters frequently touch, fight, hug, or interact physically.
  • Costumes, logos, props, or markings must be exact.
  • You need frame-to-frame continuity for animation.
  • You cannot tolerate changes in age, body shape, face, or clothing.

In those cases, treat Midjourney as a concept and image-development tool rather than a complete continuity system. A dedicated character workflow, controlled image-to-image process, or externally composited pipeline may be more appropriate.

Midjourney plus a layer-based editor

The most practical two-tool workflow is:

  1. Midjourney: explore scenes, lighting, poses, environments, and overall art direction.
  2. Photoshop or another layer-based editor: assemble the cast sheet, control placement, repair local errors, and finish the image.

Photoshop is especially useful when you need masks, typography, precise subject placement, or client-ready cleanup. Lower-cost or free alternatives include Photopea, Affinity, and GIMP. Their current licensing and feature details vary, so check their official sites before choosing one.

Midjourney’s own plan documentation lists Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega tiers, with Standard positioned for heavier generation through Relax Mode and Pro and Mega adding Stealth Mode. Because Omni generations consume twice the GPU time of regular V7 images, budget for curation and retries rather than assuming one reference will solve every scene. See the official plan comparison for current pricing and availability.
