Continuous-line quilting connects repeated motifs along a planned route, reducing the need to stop and restart. In Marie Eldredge’s demonstration, the route passes through chevrons and ribbon-candy fill; the key is to decide how the shapes connect before stitching.
What the two quilting designs look like
Chevron
A chevron is a pattern of equally spaced diagonal lines that meet to form repeated V shapes, as described by AllPeopleQuilt. In continuous quilting, repeated Vs can also help carry the stitching route from one triangle or section to the next.

Ribbon candy
Ribbon candy can be pictured as half-circles joined by diagonal lines. Amanda Murphy, a BERNINA Expert, sums up the construction: “They consist of half-circles connected with diagonal lines—that is it!” She describes stitching a half-circle on one side of the area, crossing diagonally to form one on the other side, then returning diagonally. The curves may touch or have a small gap; Murphy prefers a little space because slight inconsistencies are less noticeable.
Another useful view is a sequence of wavy lines alternating horizontally and vertically in adjoining squares, as AllPeopleQuilt describes it. That visual description and Murphy’s half-circle-and-diagonal explanation describe the same repeating movement from different angles.

- BEAUTIFUL DESIGN - Gain the confidence you need to create a beautiful quilting design using our reusable I Love It Stencil. This Full Line Stencil transfers the complete design to your fabric using our patented Pounce Pad & chalk system.
- EASY TO USE - You will be proud of your soon-to-be-finished quilt! Looking at it, you would have thought the results you achieved to be way above your skill level, not to mention your comfort level! The accurate marking and consistency of the pattern are achieved in two easy steps. One, position the stencil; two, apply the chalk through the stencil.
- EASY MAINTENANCE - Easy to clean using a damp cloth or dry microfiber towel for virtually unlimited uses! You can also iron the stencil with a warm iron to clean the chalk dust off if using the Ultimate Quilt Pounce Pad.
- DURABLE - Made of nylon mesh, this stencil is tough, waterproof, and pliable therefore may be folded for carrying to classes or for easy storage. If it becomes wrinkled, press it with a med-heated iron to bring it back to new condition
- VERSATILE - This Full Line Stencil by Hancy Creations can be used with various mediums, such as acrylic paint, glue, ink, and even etching cream on various surfaces such as leather, wood, metal, glass, etc.
Plan a continuous route before stitching
There is no single travel path that suits every quilt layout. Start by identifying where the stitching must enter and leave each motif, then trace the route through neighboring areas. A repeated chevron can offer a natural connection from one triangle to the next; in her demonstration, Marie Eldredge plans how to travel through the design while quilting chevrons and ribbon candy.
- Mark the design areas. Identify the chevrons, ribbon-candy spaces, and any boundaries the stitching must follow.
- Trace the route. Use a finger or pencil to follow the intended movement through each shape and into the next. Check that the route reaches each area without an awkward jump.
- Practice the movement. Doodle the route before quilting so you can find where turns, diagonals, and transitions feel comfortable.
- Stitch while watching the next connection. Keep the planned exit in mind as you work through a motif, rather than treating every shape as an isolated unit.
A 2023 quilt-along example shows one block-specific approach: mark straight lines, quilt ribbon candy inside triangular areas, then follow marked lines and edges to reach neighboring sections. Adapt the sequence to the shape and layout of your own quilt rather than treating it as a universal route.

Use a grid to steady smaller curves
For a small-curves row, Handi Quilter’s notes suggest marking a 3/4-inch grid and following a serpentine, or S-like, route. At grid intersections, entering and exiting at similar angles can help keep the curves more consistent. The 3/4-inch spacing is the size used in that example, not a standard for every quilt; choose a scale that suits the design and your setup.
The same notes show repeated chevrons used to travel from triangle to triangle across green areas. The practical idea is to plan how one repeat leads into the next, so transitions become part of the design instead of requiring a separate start at each section.

- Made of a tough nylon mesh- no true openings, chalk powder goes through the open screen mesh
- Transfer with Quilt Pounce Pad by Hancy Creations
- Clean with a dry cloth, a damp cloth, or warm iron if using Ultimate Quilt Pounce Pad
- Press out wrinkles with iron (medium-high heat). Use over and over
- Registration marks aid in lining up rows and repeats
Choose freehand stitching or optional guidance
Ribbon candy and chevrons can be stitched freehand. A ruler or template is optional: it may provide visual guidance, but its usefulness depends on the available space and the machine setup.
- Freehand: Doodle the route first if you want to rehearse the movement without marking or fitting a tool to the machine.
- Ruler guidance: AllPeopleQuilt notes that rulers can help guide straight lines, which can be useful for chevron legs or diagonal connectors.
- Templates: A WeAllSew tutorial uses a 3-inch ribbon-candy template with an angle template to fill an echoed zigzag. These are examples of tools used for that design, not requirements or a guarantee of fit for every setup.
Pick the approach that lets you see and follow the route comfortably. If using a ruler or template, check that it fits the quilting space and works with your machine before relying on it to guide the full design.
